Sex offender is spared jail term
By Leon Symons
Jewish Chronicle - March 8, 2001

A 33-YEAR-OLD Orthodox academic has escaped a prison term after being found guilty of indecently assaulting a nine-year-old Jewish child.

Benjamin Yudkin, of Norham Road, Oxford - who subsequently pleaded guilty to possessing pseudo-photographic images on his computer of naked girls under the age of 16 - was on Monday sentenced to three years' probation, placed on the sex offender s' register for five years and ordered to attend a treatment programme for sex offenders.

Yudkin - the son of Oxford Professor Michael Yudkin - stood trial at a Thames Valley crown court in June, denying three counts of indecent assault in relation to the Succot weekend last October, which he had been invited to spend with the child's family.

He was found guilty on one count and acquitted on the other two. Reporting restrictions in place at the time of the trial were lifted when the verdict was delivered.

Judge Spence told him: "The circumstances of this trial required that a young child be cross-examined. That gives you no credit whatsoever. There seems to have been little effect on the child and one hopes that will be the case.

"There is here a breach of trust in that you were invited into the family home for the festival of Succot and you took the opportunity to touch that child in the manner that led you to this court. I could be justified in sending you to prison but I will take the other option of a non-custodial sentence."
But he warned Yudkin that the sentence did not "in any way indicate that this is not a serious matter. All indecent assaults are serious matters."

On the computer-images offence, the judge gave Yudkin - whom he described as "very intelligent" - some credit for pleading guilty at the first opportunity, and for seeking help for his problems.
Speaking afterwards, one of the officers involved in the case, Detective Constable Phil Ashford, expressed "a little disappointment" at the verdict.

"Anyone who makes a child give evidence [in such a case] and is found guilty deserves something more than probation. Nevertheless, we are glad to have got the conviction."

At the June hearing, the jury watched a video of a police interview with the child, who described how Yudkin had rubbed his hands on clothing covering the bottom and thighs and pulled up some clothing.

The offence occurred when they were alone in the child's room on the afternoon of Sunday October 15 playing a board game, while other house guests were downstairs.

The child told the police interviewer: "I thought: why is he doing this? Why doesn't he stop?"
The victim also showed where Yudkin had placed his hands.

The child said Yudkin stopped when another adult came into the room.

On Friday night in the family succah, he had allegedly kissed his fingers, then placed them on the child's arm.

Police officer: "What did you think when he did that?"

Child: "He's horrible."

Questioned via a video-link by Yudkin's counsel, Paul Bogan, the child denied pestering him to come to the bedroom, maintaining that it had been Yudkin's idea. The child also denied Mr Bogan's suggestion that far from considering Yudkin "horrible," there had been affection for him.

Mr Bogan suggested that the touching of bottom and thigh did not really happen. "No, it did happen," the child declared.

The family friend who came into the bedroom said in evidence that she had seen Yudkin touching the child and managed to get the child out of the room. Her allegations formed the basis for the second and third counts of indecent assault, of which he was acquitted.

The mother told the court that she had confronted Yudkin. He apologised, she said, declaring that "he had gone too far and had forgotten the child was not a relative."

In evidence, Yudkin denied kissing his fingers and placing them on the child's arm. He said the child had pestered him to go to the bedroom and to play the board game.

He also denied touching the child's bottom and thighs, saying the only physical contact between them was when he had attempted to sneak a look at the cards the child was holding.

The jury of six men and six women was out for four hours 30 minutes before returning the verdicts.
At the sentencing, Mr Bogan argued the offences were at the lower end of the scale of indecent assault. There had been no touching of genitalia; the child did not touch Yudkin; nor had there been any suggestion of inducement, force or threats on Yudkin's part.

He added that reports on Yudkin showed that he had experienced difficulties with peer-group relationships from and early age "and an element of social exclusion."

This had continued into adulthood. Yudkin suffered depression, was prone to reclusiveness and had tried to commit suicide twice, in 1992 and 1997.

Recognising some years ago that he was suffering from behavioural difficulties - in particular, that he was having "sexually inappropriate feelings" towards children - Yudkin had voluntarily sought treatment, initially at London's Portman Clinic, then with another psychotherapist whom he still visits three times a week.

He has also been prescribed the anti-depressant drug Prozac.

"The fact that these offences were committed shows that the treatment is incomplete," Mr Bogan observed.

"There is also the effect of these proceedings on the Jewish community.

"He will be largely an outcast... excluded from Jewish life, not welcome in many synagogues."

Among the testimonials was one from small communities minister the Reverend Malcolm Weisman, who said that Yudkin had "fought desperately hard" in an effort to overcome his problems.

US launches approved list of bar mitzvah teachers
By Leon Symons
Jewish Chronicle - September 7, 2001

The UNITED Synagogue has created its first-ever register of "approved" bar mitzvah teachers.
The scheme got under way after being given the go-ahead by the US rabbinical council. There are 17 teachers are on the initial list.

To qualify, teachers must meet preset standards for religious knowledge and practice, demonstrate their ability to teach the reading of the Torah and Haftarah, attend in-service training programmes and comply with the requirements of the 1999 Children's Act.

This last requirement means that all those named on the list have been checked against police records for any criminal convictions.

The decision to register bar mitzvah teachers came about in part as a result of the case of Benjamin Yudkin , a former teacher convicted in June of indecent assault on a nine-year-old child.

The Rev Michael Binstock, senior education officer at the US's Agency for Jewish Education, said: "The case contributed indirectly to the creation of the register. It made parents more aware of the need to have teachers approved."

Rev Binstock professed himself "delighted" with the way in which the register had started and believes the list will eventually contain as many as 30 names.

"I met the rabbinical council on July 18. Then I sent letters to synagogues and to people on our database. Now I'm getting calls from people I have never known, who are teaching and want to be registered. It is very encouraging," he said.

"My other major concern is that the quality of the tutors is up to scratch - and I'm happy to say that there were some very good teachers indeed among those who have registered.

"Bar mitzvah teachers will now be part of a team for probably the first time.

"Until now, they have been out on their own. I intend to call regular meetings for in-service training."
The Rev Binstock will now focus his efforts on devising a new bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah syllabus, which he hoped will be ready in about a year's time.

‘Misfit' academic escapes jail term
Get Reading.com - August 1, 2001

A PROMINENT academic who indecently touched a girl during a Jewish holy festival has escaped a jail term.

Benjamin Yudkin - whose father is a lecturer at Oxford University - was also caught with indecent images of naked youngsters on his computer and has admitted to a long-standing sexual fixation with children because he is a social misfit, Reading Crown Court heard.

But on Monday Judge Stanley Spence decided not to jail the 33-year-old.

He sentenced him to three years' probation and treatment at the Thames Valley Project for sex offenders.

Judge Spence said all indecent assaults were serious but that Yudkin, an orthodox Jew who is a specialist in genetics and mathematics, needed to continue the treatment he had been receiving voluntarily for years.

Yudkin, who now faces being ostracised by Britain's Jewish community, was described by Judge Spence as a "highly intelligent and articulate man" who was capable of bending the truth.

He had denied indecently assaulting the girl, who is from the Thames Valley.

The jury at his trial in June was told that he had been asked to lead the girl's family in prayer during the festival of Succot last October.

The court was told that he touched the girl's buttocks and thigh.

The previous month he had also taken his computer to an Oxford company to retrieve some lost data and pictures of naked girls were uncovered, the court heard.

Yudkin had admitted possession of the 13 indecent pseudo-photographs at an earlier hearing, but a ban on reporting both cases was in place until his sentencing on Monday.

Paul Bogan, defending, said Yudkin, who still lives with his parents, had always found it difficult to make friends and this had led to an emotional attachment towards children.

Yudkin, who has twice attempted suicide, had realised his sexual feelings were inappropriate and visited a psychotherapist three times a week, he added.

He was receiving the treatment when he touched his victim.

Mr Bogan claimed the defendant had made "substantial progress" and that he had not touched the girl's genitals.

The computer pictures were not of sexual activity and Mr Bogan said this made both offences in the lower scale.

His treatment had already hampered his academic career and Mr Bogan said he would almost certainly be shunned by both the teaching fraternity and the Jewish community.

Judge Spence said the effect on Yudkin's victim appeared to be light but he added: "There was trust ... and you took that opportunity to touch the child in the manner that has led you to this court."

Although Judge Spence said he could "justifiably" send Yudkin to prison, he found the medical material and personal testimonials persuasive.

Yudkin will also be on the sex offenders' register for five years and must pay £1,234 in costs.

Academic jailed over child porn
By Matt Wilkinson
Oxford Mail - October 5, 2009

An academic convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl eight years ago has been jailed after police found sick images of children on his computer.

Dr Benjamin Yudkin, 41, had 82 images of children when police seized his computer in February.

Married Yudkin, of First Turn, Wolvercote, North Oxford, was sentenced to four months in prison at Oxford Crown Court today, after admitting three counts of possession of indecent images.

Matthew Walsh, prosecuting, told the court Yudkin was convicted of one count of sexually assaulting a young girl in 2001.

Yudkin was found guilty at Reading Crown Court of touching the girl at a Jewish holy festival and given three years’ probation.

He also admitted possession of 13 indecent photographs eight years ago.

Mr Justice John Saunders told the court that due to Yudkin’s previous convictions he must be put behind bars.

He said: “I accept it is a tragedy for him, but more of a tragedy for his wife and children. He must know he simply cannot carry on doing this and get away with it.”

Mr Walsh said four of the 82 images found by police had been saved by Yudkin on his computer.

Rachel Drake, defending, told the court Yudkin had worked with specialist groups to fight his urges since his conviction eight years ago.

He had devised coping strategies to ensure he did not offend again, but he stopped taking medication prescribed to prevent re-offending due to unpleasant side effects such as twitches and night sweats, Ms Drake added.

She said: “He won’t stop taking the medicine again. But it has to be accepted this was a relapse.”

Mr Justice Saunders described Yudkin as an intelligent man. He said: “This defendant suffers from depression and stopped taking the drug helping him with depression because of unpleasant side effects.

“Dr Yudkin recognises the seriousness of the offences. He knows... it is only because of people like him taking an interest in images such as these, that photographs of children are taken.”

Yudkin was disqualified from working with children and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years.

Orthodox man jailed for sex offences
By Leon Symons
Jewish Chronicle - October 13, 2009

An Orthodox academic has been jailed for four months after police found dozens of images of children in his computer.

Eight years ago Dr Benjamin Yudkin, 41, of Wolvercote, Oxford, escaped a custodial sentence after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old child in Reading.

Last week Yudkin appeared for sentence at Oxford Crown Court having previously admitted three counts of possession of indecent images.

Matthew Walsh, prosecuting, told the court about the 2001 conviction for touching a child, after Yudkin had been invited to nine-year-old’s family home during Succot the previous year. He was sentenced to three years’ probation and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.

At the time, Yudkin also pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of girls under 16 on his computer,

Mr Justice John Saunders told the court that due to Yudkin’s previous conviction he must go to prison.

He said: “I accept it is a tragedy for him, but more of a tragedy for his wife and children. He must know he simply cannot carry on doing this and get away with it.”

Rachel Drake, defending, told the court Yudkin had worked with specialist groups to fight his urges since his conviction eight years ago.

But he had stopped taking medication prescribed to prevent re-offending, due to unpleasant side effects, Ms Drake added.

She said: “He won’t stop taking the medicine again. But it has to be accepted, this was a relapse.”

Yudkin was disqualified from working with children and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a further seven years.

A Sin By Dereliction

A Sin By Dereliction
Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, MD
JACS - March 6, 2001

Dr. Twerski, a leading authority on substance abuse in the Jewish community, is affiliated with the Gateway Rehabilitation Center in Aliquippa, PA.

In the viduy we confess, "We have sinned, we have deceived, we have stolen, etc." Inasmuch as we are frail and fallible humans, we may be unable to withstand temptations and we, therefore, may commit transgressions. Whereas I can understand the vulnerability to sin when there is personal gain, I am unable to understand why we confess "Yoatznu ra (we have given bad counsel)". What personal gain could there possibly be from giving someone bad advice? Why would anyone commit this sin?

I have come to the conclusion that "giving bad counsel" is not an intentional sin, but one which we commit unknowingly. I.e., we think we are giving the person good advice, but in reality the advice is bad, and since this can result in harm to the person, we are culpable for having caused an individual harm even though our intentions were good.

However, the Talmud states that an unintentional sin committed by a scholar is equivalent to an intentional sin, because the scholar, in possession of knowledge, should have known better. In his case, ignorance is not a defense.

Lay people are not necessarily scholars, nor is their counsel frequently sought. Rabbis, on the other hand, are learned and are considered authorities who can provide proper counsel. If they fail to do so because of lack of adequate knowledge, even though their intentions were good, they are held responsible as though it were an intentional transgression. I, therefore, suspect that "Yoatznu ra" is a confession intended for rabbis.

I have had considerable experience with cases brought before rabbis for advice and guidance, where, due to inadequate knowledge, rabbis have given advice which has turned out to be extremely harmful. Namely, there are many problems in the Jewish community of which rabbis may be unaware, such as addictive gambling, alcoholism and/or drug addiction, spouse abuse, child abuse, and other social ills, which, for some reason there is a misconception that these do not occur among Jews, and certainly not among observant Jews.

Couples have come to the rabbi with marital problems, and no inquiry is made as to whether there is a problem of alcohol or substance abuse. Both men and women are susceptible to alcoholism, and there is fairly widespread abuse of prescription drugs, which can be every bit as devastating as heroin and cocaine. Incidentally, even the latter occur among some of the finest families. There are families who are in financial straits, and it does not occur to the rabbi to inquire about the possibility of addictive gambling. Spouses and children may be victims of both physical and emotional abuse, and this may go unsuspected. One battered wife complained, "Our rabbi would never believe if I told him about my husband's behavior at home. On the outside he is an absolute tzaddik, and if I told the rabbi about how he mistreats me, the rabbi would think I am fabricating and consider me meschuge." A number of rabbis who have consulted me about problems of their congregants who were alcoholic, whose problems became so manifest that denial was no longer feasible, have become interested in some of these problems, and have said to me, "I am shocked at how ignorant I was about these conditions."

I recall very well that when I received my semicha, I was quite well versed in halacha, and could render reasonable decisions on problems of ritual. However, nowhere in my education was I exposed to the various problems that I have enumerated. Ironically, even in psychiatric training these were not taught, and unfortunately some psychotherapists who are otherwise quite competent fall into the same trap of not recognizing these conditions, and treating their patients for those diagnoses with which they are familiar but which may be incorrect.

While I do not wish to be an alarmist, let me point out that while making an error in most questions of halacha is a serious matter it pales before errors in dinei nefashos. Lives that are lost and families that are decimated by addictive conditions or abusive behavior fall into the category of "defects that are irreversible." As rabbis, we should make every effort to see that when we beat our heart for "Yoatznura", that it not be a true confession.

Case of Nathaniel Benjamin Levi Bar-Jonah

Case of Nathaniel Benjamin Levi Bar-Jonah
(AKA: David Paul Brown)

February 15, 1957 - April 13, 2008

Worcester, MA
Shrewsbury, MA

Path of a Predator Consistent problems were seen regarding Nathaniel Bar-Jonah during his treatment and after his release
By George B. Griffin
Worcester Telegram & Gazette - March 4, 2001

The Massachusetts Treatment Center for Sexually Dangerous Persons, where David Paul Brown became Nathaniel Benjamin Levi Bar-Jonah, was never a place where inmates cared much about the feelings of the staff.

The men incarcerated for psychological and psychiatric treatment at the Bridgewater facility were violent felons who had been committed because they had acted out their most bizarre and twisted sexual fantasies.

They had raped, sodomized, tortured and murdered women, boys and girls. Some of the inmates made no secret of the fact that they would like to do the same to the female counselors and security officers
who were being paid to help them or guard them.

One inmate kept a "rape list," adding the names of counselors and officers to it as he met them inside. Because her name appeared in his writings, a female correction officer who lived alone obtained a
license to carry firearms for self-defense after the man was released.

Not long after, when that same inmate was caught lurking about the grounds and stalking women, a female psychotherapist complained to treatment center officers about lapses in security.

The center was a place where rudeness and sexual offensiveness often were not far below the surface.

So on the hot and humid Thursday of June 27, 1991, when Mr. Bar-
Jonah walked out of the place he had called home for more than 11 years, his manner of saying goodbye was perhaps less than shocking to those who were present.

He walked past a female Department of Correction sergeant and her male subordinate officers, unbuckled his belt, unzipped his fly,  dropped his trousers and mooned them.

His mother, Tyra Brown, had driven to the center that day to pick up Mr. Bar-Jonah.

An inmate who witnessed the incident recalled in a subsequent letter to a therapist that Mrs. Brown slapped her son, who seemed unconcerned by the rebuff.

Within months of his release, Mr. Bar-Jonah would plead guilty to assaulting a boy in Oxford as his mother visited a post office, then move to Montana to serve two years of probation.

Now, he stands accused of a series of attacks on young boys, and he has been charged with murdering and cannibalizing 10-year-old Zachary X. Ramsay, whom authorities believe was abducted in 1996 as he walked to an elementary school in Great Falls, Mont.

The circumstances of Mr. Bar-Jonah's departure from Massachusetts, where he had posed as a police officer to commit crimes in Shrewsbury and other communities, have drawn considerable scrutiny in recent months. Prosecutors and others have raised questions as to whether Mr. Bar-Jonah slipped through the cracks of the Massachusetts judicial system only to become a predator in the West.

An investigation by the Sunday Telegram provides little cause for comfort.

Indeed, a range of interviews and the examination of thousands of pages of documents point to consistent problems with Mr. Bar-Jonah's actions during his treatment, as well as after it ended.

SEXUALLY DANGEROUS
By the time he was released, Mr. Bar-Jonah had been exposed to an extensive course of therapy at Bridgewater, to which he had been transferred from the state prison in Concord on Oct. 11, 1979, after Superior Court Judge John H. Meagher found him to be a "sexually dangerous person."

That commitment came after Mr. Bar-Jonah had been convicted of kidnapping and attempted murder in connection with the 1977 abduction of two teen-age boys from the parking lot of the White City Cinemas  in Shrewsbury -- a crime that was part of a history of aberrant
behavior that dated back to his early childhood.

At the time of his conviction and commitment, Mr. Bar-Jonah, who grew up in Webster and Dudley, was still using his given name, David Paul Brown.

The commitment to the treatment center was for a term of one day to life, and was based on the findings and recommendations of several mental health workers. But one recommendation in particular, that of A. Nicholas Groth, then a psychologist at the Harrington Memorial Hospital mental health clinic in Southbridge, carried special weight.

In a letter dated Dec. 12, 1977, to Mr. Bar-Jonah's defense lawyer, Michael V. Caplette, Mr. Groth recommended that what Mr. Bar- Jonah really needed was not criminal incarceration, but psychiatric treatment.

REDUCTION OF RISK?
"Based on my experience in forensic mental health and having worked for over 10 years at the Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Sexually Dangerous Persons in Bridgewater, Mass., I would recommend this facility as the placement of choice for your client," Mr. Groth wrote. "The environment is a humane one and there is a decent program of psychiatric rehabilitation available there. Further the commitment is indefinite and, therefore, the risk of a person being returned to the community while still dangerous is reduced."

Mr. Groth was forthright in saying that he had worked at the treatment center for many years. But he failed to mention in that letter, or to the court, so far as can be determined from existing records, that he had left the center in 1975 after a highly public rebuke by Dr. Harry L. Kozol.

Dr. Kozol was the founder of the center and served as its first director. The programs initially used to treat sex offenders in Bridgewater had been developed by him in the 1950s, at the behest of the Legislature.

Mr. Groth first worked at the center in 1966. But it was not until Dec. 31, 1975, that he received his first license to be a clinical psychologist in Massachusetts.

HEARST TRIAL TESTIMONY

The row between Dr. Kozol and Mr. Groth became public during testimony at the trial of publishing heiress Patricia Hearst, who had been kidnapped by, and then had become a member of, a terrorist gang calling itself the Symbionese Liberation Army.

The gang was responsible for bank robberies, assaults and other criminal acts, including the extortion of at least $3 million from Ms. Hearst's father, William Randolph Hearst.

Ms. Hearst had been arrested on Sept. 18, 1975, and the ensuing legal proceedings garnered worldwide attention.

Dr. Kozol was called to testify as an expert witness at the trial of Ms. Hearst, who had claimed as a defense that she had been brainwashed into helping the SLA members commit their crimes. Mr. Groth was called to rebut Dr. Kozol's testimony.

But the exchanges ventured into personal territory, as Mr. Groth, under questioning by F. Lee Bailey and other lawyers, conceded that Dr. Kozol had suspended him from the treatment center for cause.

At issue, according to trial transcripts, was Mr. Groth's admission that he had taken an inmate out of the center to appear on an NBC-TV program called "Men Who Rape."

OUT-OF-STATE TRIP
The unauthorized trips by the inmate included a trip to a television studio in Massachusetts and a second trip to Arlington, Va., near Washington, D.C., where the inmate was allowed to remain overnight.

Mr. Groth, while on the witness stand, admitted that he had taken the inmate out of Bridgewater against orders of the Executive Committee of the center's staff.

Mr. Groth left the center in November 1975, but he would remain involved, albeit tangentially, in its work. Mr. Groth later founded Forensic Mental Health Associates, a consulting group that contracts to provide seminars and instructional materials on sexual abuse and forensic mental health to private and government agencies in Massachusetts and elsewhere.

When Mr. Bar-Jonah arrived at the treatment center for sexually dangerous persons, it still was part of the old Bridgewater State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, an antiquated and sinister place that was starkly chronicled in Frederick Wiseman's landmark 1967 documentary film, "Titicut Follies."

In 1986, a new building was opened on the hospital grounds and the population of more than 250 sexual predators, including Mr. Bar- Jonah, was relocated.

QUIET IN A GROUP
One inmate who knew Mr. Bar-Jonah in both the old and new settings described how he kept to himself about his crimes.

In a letter dated Dec. 20, 2000, and containing numerous grammatical mistakes, the inmate said that during therapy groups, Mr. Bar-Jonah would never admit to sexually assaulting a child.

"All Nathaniel Bar-Jonah would own in group was that he would pull up alongside of a boy, flash his police badge, and told the child to get in his car," the inmate wrote. "And the child not knowing that he wasn't a real police officer would comply. Bar-Jonah said all he did once he got the boys was take them to a secluded area and pull their pants down.

"He never once admitted to ever sexually assaulting any children in our group. Nor would he admit to molesting them, or wanting to sexually assault, or molest children, or anyone else. When he was asked of these things he remain silent with a smile on his face, or he would smile or grin, and chuckle, but never answer anything."

Paula E. Erickson, a former psychotherapist at the treatment center who knew Mr. Bar-Jonah from 1986 until he was released in 1991, said in an interview that Mr. Bar-Jonah had been "repeatedly caught with pornography" that had been smuggled inside in laundry or food deliveries.

DEEMED `UNTREATABLE'
A supervisory psychologist, Dr. Al Jurgela, who oversaw therapy on the unit and who has since died, concluded that Mr. Bar-Jonah was "untreatable," and had assigned him to a section of the center reserved for inmates who refused to participate in rehabilitation, Mrs. Erickson said.

Mr. Bar-Jonah was housed alternately in the "D" and "C" units of the center. These units were the "back wards" that contained inmates who refused to participate in therapy and who were considered untreatable, Mrs. Erickson said.

Two other treatment venues, the "A" and "B" units, housed offenders who were engaged in treatment and therapy programs and who had indicated a willingness to seek counseling and psychological help.

"I was a team leader and I was intimately involved in figuring out the people who were to be put on my A and B units," Mrs. Erickson said. "The A and B units each had a treatment focus for people actively engaged, and the C and D units were back wards where we placed the fixated, regressed pedophiles considered to be the least- treatable of all sex offenders. ... That is where Bar-Jonah was."

The men in the C and D units "simply collected down there and didn't engage in treatment," she said. "They weren't interested," she added, and Mr. Bar-Jonah "hung mainly with the church group."

The inmates in that group refused to participate in therapy, saying they believed "Jesus was the treatment," Mrs. Erickson recalled.

A `FIXATED' INMATE
"Bar-Jonah is a fixated, regressed pedophile," she said. "There is no question about that."

She said he displayed a range of outward behaviors.

"He crept around like a little rat," Mrs. Erickson said. But he also had a capacity to joke and be affable, a capacity, Mrs. Erickson said, that could be disarming to naive children.

"He could smile and laugh," she said. "He could be a Santa Claus or a clown."

The inmate who knew Mr. Bar-Jonah, however, documented what he believed was a dark side that Mr. Bar-Jonah tried not to show.

"Bar-Jonah changed his name from David Brown to Nathaniel Bar- Jonah when he converted to Judaism," the inmate wrote. "Group members were questioning why he converted to being Jewish and were questioning if he were attempting to escape what he did to these children, and questioned if the Jewish identity was a means to get a new ID nobody would know of, so if he ever got out he could continue on molesting and raping other children and be unknown to the community and law enforcement agencies."

The inmate said that when the subject came up during group therapy, the psychologist who was running the group intervened.

The psychologist "told us that there was nothing wrong with Nate wanting to be one of the `chosen people,' and he thought that was great," the inmate remembered. "Meanwhile, Bar-Jonah would sit there silent, and grin, or chuckle about it. I don't know if the federal or state police in Montana knew these things of Bar-Jonah or not, but I thought I'd share them with you. I thought it would be important to  know, where the FBI is checking in other states for more victims."
