It's time to stop having Carlebach minyans and time to honor and respect the women Shlomo Carlebach assaulted.

The Awareness Center, Inc.
The Awareness Center closed. We operated from April 30, 1999 - April 30, 2014. This site is being provided for educational & historical purposes. We were the international Jewish Coalition Against Sexual Abuse/Assault (JCASA); and were dedicated to ending sexual violence in Jewish communities globally. We did our best to operate as the make a wish foundation for Jewish survivors of sex crimes. In the past we offered a clearinghouse of information, resources, support and advocacy.

It was in the 70's. I was a young, married woman. After a concert, my (male) cousin and I went up to compliment Shlomo on his music. He said to me that he would like to discuss the music further over a cup of tea. Not knowing how to react, I agreed, to meet him at a local diner. I said to him that this was not a kosher place, and he said that was fine. When the time approached, I sensed that something was not right. I called my husband and asked him to join us, which he did. Shlomo was clearly distressed that my husband was there, and shook his head at me, repeating my name, as if I had done something wrong. I then asked him how was his wife. Shaking his head at me, repeating my name, he proceeded to tell us that she was very tired and not well. We left him there in the certain knowledge that I had avoided being taken advantage of by a sexual predator.
