Finding A Rabbi: Tips For Survivors of Sexual Violence

Finding A Rabbi: Tips For Survivors of Sexual Violence

(2005) By Vicki Polin, MA, LCPC and Michael Salamon, PhD

Suggested questions to ask at an initial interview:

1. How old are you?

2. Where were you ordained (get smicha)?  Who ordained you?

3. How long have you been practicing as a Rabbi?

4. What is your educational background? What degrees do you hold? Where did you get them?

5. Tell me about your experiences working with survivors?

6. Do you ever give hugs if someone asks for one?
(In many movements of Judaism this type of contact is frowned upon and may be considered immoral/unethical.)

7. What are your professional plans in the next few years?  Do you have any plans to move to another city or state?

8. If you left this area, would you help me find another rabbi to talk to?

9. Do you think sexual relations with one of your congregants can sometimes/always/never be helpful?
(If the rabbi responds other than "never," leave.  You may also want to consider reporting the rabbi to the rabbinical organization he/she belong to).

10. Do you think child/adult sex is sometimes/always/never OK?
(If the rabbi responds other than "never," leave.  You may also want to consider reporting the rabbi to the rabbinical organization he/she belong to).

11. How do you deal with your own Secondary PTSD / Compassion Fatigue / Vicarious Victimization?
(If a rabbi works with congregants who have been victimized, after awhile they will burn out unless they have the right kind of support system)

12. Have you had any special training in working with survivors of sexual abuse/assault?  If so, what is that training?

13. Are you a survivor of childhood sexual abuse or of a sexual assault as an adult? If yes, have you received counseling for it?

14. Could I reach you in a crisis or emergency?  What boundaries do you have regarding emergency phone calls?

15. What are some of your hobbies and interests?

16. Would you tell me a little about your philosophy of life?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

After The Initial Interview:

How do you feel about yourself?  Do you feel more depressed?  Do you feel validated?  Do you feel empowered?

It's important that you feel comfortable in the setting that you will be communicating with your rabbi.  It's not uncommon to notice the furniture, paintings and books in the office. Did they make you feel comfortable or did you notice things that made you feel uneasy?

Was the Rabbi direct and open in answering all of your questions or did he/she avoid any of them?

Did you get the impression that this person feels he/she has all the answers to every problem (if so, this is not the rabbi for you), or did you get the feeling he/she was interested in exploring with you, with no preconceived expectations of where you'd be going?

Does the Rabbi have values/interests similar to yours?

Did you get the feeling that this person is a sensitive, wise, mature person with whom you can share your healing journey?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things To Keep In Mind
Trust your own judgment!  Choose a Rabbi that you might also choose as a friend -- someone you can trust who has similar tastes, attitudes and values.

His/Her office should be a place where you feel comfortable and protected as well as encouraged to take risks.

You need a companion, not a crutch.  Remember, YOU are in charge of your life.

If the Rabbi is himself/herself an AMAC (adult Molested as a Child), it is important to find out if the Rabbi has had therapy.  It is unfair and incongruent for a Rabbi to expect YOU to do work with him/her if she/he hasn't been willing to do his/her own work.

Believe in yourself -- You're worth it!

Extradited fugitive faces prison for 1994 robberies
Stole officer's money at gunpoint
BY Brian Prince
Asbury Park Press - February 26, 2005

TOMS RIVER — TOMS RIVER -- More than a year after his arrest, Ronen Shimoni has been brought back to the United States to face prison for the 1994 robbery of an off-duty sheriff's officer at a Toms River bank.

Shimoni, 35, was extradited from Canada on Thursday. He had been held by authorities there since October 2003, when he was arrested by police in Toronto.

After he exhausted all his legal challenges to extradition, Shimoni was brought back to the United States by a federal marshal and an Ocean County Sheriff's detective and is currently being held on $1 million bail in Ocean County Jail.

"(The investigation) finally come to fruition," Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael Schroeder said.
Shimoni was wanted on charges of robbery, carjacking, attempted kidnapping, escape and theft. According to Senior Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Francis Hodgson, the extradition agreement includes Shimoni pleading guilty to first degree robbery. He will face a sentence of between 10 to 20 years, Hodgson said.

Shimoni's extradition starts a new chapter in an investigative odyssey that began in June 1994, when sheriff's officer Felix Velez was robbed at gunpoint by two men in the foyer of the then-First Fidelity bank branch on Route 37.

The men stole the $80 Velez had just withdrawn from an ATM, then forced him into the back seat of his car and drove to the bank's rear parking lot. During the incident, Velez identified himself as a sheriff's officer, pulled out his weapon and shot at one of the men. He scuffled with the second suspect before fleeing to a nearby gas station, where police were notified.

Investigators matched fingerprints from the crime scene to Shimoni some six years later when he was arrested for a robbery in Los Angeles, where he jumped bail, Schroeder said.

Police eventually identified the second suspect, Eyal Benyosef, who was then arrested in early 2001 in Queens, and indicted on robbery, carjacking, attempted kidnapping, escape and theft stemming from the crime in Toms River.

Benyosef violated bail after his arrest and is believed to be in Israel, Hodgson said.

Jeff Thompson, spokesman for the sheriff's department, said Sheriff William L. Polhemus was pleased that the cooperative efforts of members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force led to Shimoni's capture and extradition.
"We're pleased to see him here to face justice now," Thompson said.

Interior Min. to expel 15 prostitutes who testified against pimps
By Ruth Sinai
Haaretz - Mon., February 07, 2005 Shvat 28, 5765
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/536799.html

The Interior Minnistry is planning to expel some 15 women who were brought here to work as prostitutes and agreed to testify against the men who imported and sold them. The Justice Ministry, however, is planning to help them fight expulsion, through its department for legal assistance to the needy.

The women are residents of a hostel set up by the state for the purpose of protecting them. Some of them have already testified against the pimps and women-traffickers; others have expressed the desire to do so, but are not needed. All would like to remain in Israel and work for another year. They were promised they would be able to do so by then interior minister Avraham Poraz and Meretz-Yahad MK Zahava Gal-On, who headed a parliamentary committee on women- trafficking.

Yasmin Keshet, the lawyer who is representing the victims, last week applied to the Interior Ministry on behalf of a 19-year-old from the Ukraine, who infiltrated into Israel via Egypt. She grew up with an alcoholic mother and a stepfather who abused her and agreed to come to Israel as a prostitute. According to the charge sheet against her procurers, she was sold at a Tel Aviv parking lot to the owner of an escort agency, where she worked without being paid, ostensibly to pay for her travel expenses to Israel. She was raped by the agency owner and suffered injuries. Because of her testimony, the pimp, Grig Sholkin, was convicted of human trafficking, assault and other charges, by his own admission. He has not yet been sentenced.

Hadas Shafir of the State Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the young woman cooperated fully with the police and the prosecution, and provided evidence concerning several suspects. As a result, she has received threats and is scared to return to the Ukraine. She also tried to sue Sholkin in a labor court for not paying her, but withdrew her lawsuit after her family - including her 10-year-old half-brother - was threatened. Meanwhile, she received a temporary visa and is working in a cosmetics firm. The lawyer said that the woman hopes to continue working there another year and to earn money before returning home.

Livonia, Michigan

NOTE: There are several individuals by the name of Seth David Cohen.  The on on this page was born on August 22, 1951.

Pled no contest to Accosting a Minor for Immoral Purposes and was later sentenced to 60 days in jail with credit for one day. Upon release Cohen will be placed on probation, with terms, for a period of three years. Additionally, Cohen was ordered to pay fines and costs totaling $720.

This is a case that was in the orthodox community of Detroit. There was very little media attention due to the fact there was pressure from the religious leaders to keep the case quiet. Shunning the facts is another way we make survivors feel they are to blame for being victimized. We need to start honoring them for the bravery it took to come forward and do what was needed to convict or at least to attempt to convict offenders.

It's time we start being honest and stop hiding the facts that sexual violence happens in Jewish communities at the same rate that it happens in any other community.

Remember one out of every three to five female and one out of every four to seven male anti-Semitic individuals were also abused as children by offenders who share the same philosophical view as they do.

Livonia State suspends doctor's license
Detroit News (Wayne Briefs) - Wednesday, September 21, 2005
By Detroit News staff reports and wire services
http://www.detnews.com/2005/wayne/0509/26/B02-322289.htm

The Michigan Department of Community Health suspended the medical license of Dr. Seth D. Cohen. Cohen, who lives in Livonia, pleaded no contest in Oakland Circuit Court to accosting a minor for immoral purposes and was sentenced to 60 days in jail. The court also required Cohen to wear an electronic tether for six months, pay $720 in fines and court costs and successfully complete a sex offender treatment program, said T.J. Bucholz, the department's spokesman. Cohen failed to notify the state within 30 days of his conviction, so that led to an indefinite license suspension. An administrative hearing will be this year to address the status of Cohen's license.
