An attorney with the firm said Goldstein resigned earlier in March for "personal reasons" and his information had been removed from the company website.

Jewish Community Still behind on Confronting Abuse

Jewish Community Still behind on Confronting Abuse
By Asher Lipner
Jewish Week - June 22, 2010

As someone who has worked with numerous survivors of sexual abuse in the Orthodox community over the past 10 years, I have been privileged to bear witness to the stories of people who, after having their voices taken away from them, become able to speak for the first time, in the course of their healing, about the horrors they have endured.

Many describe the pain of being forced to suffer in silence as even more traumatic than the experience of being sexually violated. They are warned to keep quiet, lest they bring shame to the community and to themselves and "alienate people from their cause." This puts survivors in an impossible Catch-22. After struggling, often for years, with their personal demons of pain, loneliness, anger, shame and sense of betrayal, when their healing requires them to give testimony to their victimization and to express their feelings about it, they are told in a million different ways, "Shah Shtill!"

But the problem is not going away, although tragically thousands of survivors are "going away" from us, by abandoning Judaism or even worse, being lost to drugs and alcohol, to mental illness and even suicide. Solving the problem necessitates exposing it to the light of day, and for that we need to reach out to survivors and to listen with empathy to their painful stories. If we do not learn from the mistakes of our past, we are doomed to repeat them.

It is with this in mind that I offer the following plea.

Ten years ago, Jewish Week editor Gary Rosenblatt bravely blew the whistle on a decades-long cover-up of rabbinic sexual abuse in the case of Baruch Lanner, a top official of the National Conference of Synagogue Youth (NCSY). This, together with the roughly 40 articles about abuse and its cover-up published by The Jewish Week since that time, has undoubtedly paved the way for others to follow suit.

However, our community still shamefully lags behind even the Catholic Church in addressing our catastrophe, due to the unwillingness of our leaders to apologize and to reach out effectively to survivors of abuse. We are regularly bombarded in the media with rabbinic sex scandals, convictions of Orthodox child predators and lawsuits against yeshivas harboring molesters. A leading Orthodox mental health agency fails to warn the community about abusers it "treats." Victims of abuse and their families who report to the authorities are ostracized and bullied, much the same way that the victims of Baruch Lanner were, and district attorneys, seeking support from Orthodox communities, seem to ignore this criminal intimidation of witnesses. Mainstream Orthodox media do not report on cases of abuse, educate people about prevention or inform victims where to go for help.

Even as I write, the Queens Vaad Harabbanim continues to cover up for one of its own, who was forced off the Rabbinical Council of America years ago for allegedly molesting children, the Baltimore Vaad Harrabanim covers up for a rabbi in their community's prestigious yeshiva who is said to have sexually abused students for decades, and the Lakewood (New Jersey) yeshiva's rabbinic leaders are pressuring the parents of a victim of abuse who reported it to the police to drop the charges.

In 2001, the then-new executive of the Orthodox Union, the parent organization of NCSY, said about sexual abuse in the Orthodox community: "I would like to see the OU take a leadership role in raising awareness about this problem." But while the RCA, the OU's rabbinic arm, has made several public pronouncements warning the community of the epidemic and offering practical ways to combat it, the OU has yet to make a public statement, nor has it supported any of the legislative initiatives of the Jewish Board of Advocates for Children (www.jewishadvocates.org).

The OU does take the lead in many important areas, but it continues to refuse to publish the full report of the NCSY Special Commission. This, despite the fact that both the victims and the community have a right to know exactly what caused this tragedy, and that hundreds of thousands of community dollars were spent on the investigation.

So, the thankless fight to bring awareness to the community is left to the grassroots efforts of survivors of abuse like Joel Engelman, Mark Weiss, Joseph Diangelo and David Framowitz, and their supporters like Vicki Polin and The Awareness Center, Survivors for Justice, Mark Appel, Rabbi Nochem Rosenberg, Rabbi Yosef Blau and Rabbi Yitzchak Eisenman, Assemblyman Dov Hikind, The Jewish Survivors Network, JSafe, and JBAC, supported by the RCA. Also spreading awareness have been bloggers like Unorthodoxjew (UOJ), FrumFollies, FailedMessiah and LittleSheep, and courageous editors like Phil Jacobs (Baltimore Jewish Times) and Mayer Fertig (Jewish Star), in addition to Gary Rosenblatt.

Let us pray that all Jewish leaders will unite with us now to stop sexual abuse and act as a "light unto the nations," so that nobody else will ever have to endure this terrible trauma.

Dr. Asher Lipner is a clinical psychologist, an ordained rabbi and a survivor of clergy sexual abuse.

Cases of Meir Dascalowitz and Rabbi Baruch Lebovits

One of the saddest parts of this story is the fact that Lebovits claims to have been a victim of sexual abuse as a child. Meir Dascalowitz, claims to be a victim of Lebovits, and Dascolawitz was arrested on charges of molesting a child. Here is a case we have 4 generations of sex offenders and victims. What will it take to end this insanity?

Rabbi Baruch Lebovits was recently convicted of abusing a 16-year-old boy and has been charged in two other sex cases.

Meir Dascalowitz made the allegation in a confession while he was questioned about his 2009 encounters with a 12-year-old in a ritual bath in Williamsburg, a source told the Daily News.An orthodox Jewish man charged with molesting a boy at a Brooklyn synagogue dropped a bombshell on cops: He claimed he was abused years ago by a rabbi just sent to prison for preying on youngsters.
Dascalowitz alleged that he had been molested by Rabbi Baruch Lebovits - who was recently convicted of abusing a 16-year-old boy and has been charged in two other sex cases. "He said he was molested by Lebovits and made an outcry, but nothing ever happened," a source said.
Dascalowitz, 28, an unemployed married clerk with a wife and child, was arrested Tuesday after he left his therapist's home.
Prosecutors allege he molested the 12-year-old once a month between January and June 2009, according to court papers. Almost a year later, the boy told his father, who went to authorities, prosecutor Wilfredo Cotto told a judge.
Dascalowitz declined to comment as he left the courthouse after being freed on $150,000 bail.
"He denies the allegations," said his lawyer Israel Fried.
Lebovits' lawyer also declined to comment.

Alleged Cult Leader - Founder of Jews for Jesus

Alleged Cult Leader - Founder of Jews for Jesus
By Vicki Polin, MA, LCPC, NCC
The Awareness Center's Daily Newsletter - June 21, 2010

I have a cousin who is deaf who got involved with (the cult like group) Jews for Jesus when she was a teenager.

My cousin grew up in Oklahoma, and I grew up in Illinois. Because of the miles between us, I barely knew her as a child. As adults we developed a friendship do to the connection we made using the internet and AOL.

About 13 years ago I wanted to learn as much as I could about Judaism, to help my cousin

During these early years of my own learning, I volunteered time on line as a counter-missionary in Jewish chat rooms on AOL and was also a JCOMM (in AOL's Jewish Community online). Doing this type of volunteer work is what eventually lead to me going to Neve Yerushalayim (a women's yeshiva in Jerusalem) and eventually lead me to creating The Awareness Center.

At one point a rabbi involved in the counter-missionary movement donated an Art Scroll Chumash to me to give to my cousin –– in hopes of helping her learn. At the time I was told that my cousin would most likely not take the book, without the approval of Martin (Moishe) Rosen –– who was a close friend of hers. Around that same time my cousin told me that Rosen was going to be in the Chicagoland area for a high school graduation of one of his granddaughters. She told me he wanted to meet me, and asked me if I would agree. So I did.

During the 2 1/2 hour meeting (at an upscale hotel in Skokie), Martin Rosen went on and on about how he started Jews for Jesus. He told me that it was originally an idea he had for a project for a marketing class he was taking back in the late 1950's. He told me that he had no idea that his idea would take off the way it did. When I asked him about the Chumash, he told me it was "treif", and did not want to encourage my cousin to read it. When I offered it to my cousin she took it.

As the months went on, my cousin began disclosing her own child abuse (over the years she's became public with her history, which can be found on the internet). As she began to disclose her past, I started to discontinue trying to persuade her to rethink her religious beliefs.

As survivors we all need to realize that we need to find things to help us heal. Though her views are different then mine, she deserves the right to choose what is helpful to her –– to make it through the day. She needed to find her own answers to make sense of the insanity she grew up with. I honor and respect my cousin for being able to survive and to grow into the beautiful person she has become.

What I do want to say is that it saddens me a great deal to know that one of the major things that pushed my cousin over the edge -- of not wanting to learn about "real" Judaism, came from the hands of a few Torah observant Jews in NYC. I say this because Martin Rosen was pretty smart. He set her up.

Martin Rosen knew that if his people would send her to various locations in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, that he could count on the fact that orthodox Jews would spit at her and use possible physical force against her, when they saw the literature she would handout regarding his organization. You have to understand, my cousin was in her late teens - early adulthood. She knew nothing about Judaism when she was sent by Jews for Jesus to New York to prothelytize. All she knew was how Rosen would demonize those from the Torah observant world. She was basically told that only "completed" Jews behaved civilly. Handing out his literature would prove his point. Besides being very young and deaf, my cousin is under five feet tall. Can you imagine how scared she must have been when her own people attacked her?

If only those who assaulted her back in the 1980's, knew her history, I'm sure they would have treated her differently, and perhaps she would have been more open minded in learning more about "real" Judaism.

From the Heart

I'm sharing the following with you, because I know I am not the only person who has ever experienced what I'm about to share with you.  It's a topic which I doubt has really ever been discussed in detail in any public venue.

Several years ago I saw an elderly couple walking in a parking lot of a mall in my home town.  The couple looked very familiar to me, yet I was having a difficult time placing them.  As I got closer I realized who they were. . . I said, "hi mom, hi dad".  They looked at me, said hello and then wished me a good day as they went on with their day.  These were two people who I spent the first eighteen years of my life with.  Though they are biologically my parents, they are virtually strangers to me.

Today is my father's 78th birthday. It's such an odd thing to say that I haven't known my father since he was 47. He's been out of my life for over 30 years.

I know that I am not the only adult survivors of child abuse (emotional, physical and sexual abuse) that is confronted with not knowing what to do, nor how to feel when birthdays, mother's day, father's day and or other holidays or anniversaries come around.   For me, these types of days often leaves a void of emotions and feelings.

I know that several other adult survivors of child abuse may also need to separate from their families to heal, yet often keep it a secret for fear of being shamed or looked at as being different. I felt that it was important to share my experience in hopes of helping others realize that they are not alone, and to know that they do not need to keep their silence any longer.

I also felt the need to acknowledge my father's special day some how.  I guess this note is my way of saying "Happy Birthday Dad".

To Survivors of Incest and other forms of Child Abuse Regarding Father's Day

Father's day is approaching, if you are a survivors of incest, remember you are not alone.  Not all father's should or need to be honored.  Just like any holiday, be kind to yourself.  Surround yourself with people who inspire you to heal.

Remember you are good and always have been. What happened to you was a crime.  It's NOT your fault.

Cops Nab Sex Attack Suspect; Seek Two in Unrelated Attack
Two Men Raped Victim in Ditmas Park Area
Brooklyn Eagle - June 7, 2010

BROOKLYN — An arrest has been made in one series of Brooklyn sexual assaults, but police Monday were also seeking information about a well-publicized rape in the shadow of Prospect Park.

Bjorn Daley, 31, of Brooklyn was arrested and charged with two sexual assaults involving underaged girls. Police on Wednesday had reported that a 10-year-old girl was forcibly grabbed near Brooklyn and Kingston avenues, but the suspect ran away when the girl screamed.

Ten minutes later, say police, he walked up to a 13-year-old girl at nearby Maple Street and Kingston Avenue and grabbed her by the arm. The girl ran, and the suspect fled on Kingston Avenue. Daley was charged with unlawful imprisonment, forcible touching, acting in a manner to injure a child and sexual abuse.

Police, however, are still looking for a suspect who approached a 19-year-old woman on Wednesday at Linden Boulevard and Bedford Avenue, grabbed her and forced her between two cars, where he sexually assaulted her. He then pushed her several blocks to a secluded area on Parkside Avenue and raped her.

According to police reports, a second suspect then arrived at the scene and also raped her, after which both fled the area.

The first suspect is described as an African-American man, 5-foot-7, 160 pounds, wearing blue jeans, white sneakers and a white T-shirt. The second is described as an African-American man, about 6 feet, wearing a gray sweater, black sneakers, a black baseball hat and a goatee. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.

Brooklyn DA releases names of 46 convicted child sex-abusers who terrorized the Orthodox Jewish community from within
By Susan Edelman
New York Post - July 21, 2013

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office has convicted 45 men — and one woman — in sex-attack cases in the Orthodox Jewish community since it began a crackdown more than four years ago, officials say.
DA Charles Hynes gave The Post their names, except for several juveniles, in a major shift from his prior stance that publicizing the perverts could expose the victims to vicious intimidation or deter others from coming forward.
“We feel now it’s good for the community to know those who have been convicted,” said spokesman Jerry Schmetterer.
Hynes, who is running for re-election, has come under fire from critics who charge that his policies pander to ultra-Orthodox voters.
Of 118 cases pursued under a program called Kol Tzedek, Hebrew for “voice of justice,” 25 sex offenders have gotten jail time, officials said. The longest sentence — 103 years — went to Nechemya Weberman, an unlicensed therapist who had abused a girl starting when she was 12.
The DA still refuses to name those arrested in pending cases for horrific crimes, including:
* The kidnapping and sexual assault of a 4-year-old girl;
* The sodomy of two young boys in a synagogue;
* A 33-year-old man accused of molesting three boys, 13, 14 and 15, in his yeshiva.
Of the convictions, 33 were felonies, 13 misdemeanors. Ten other offenders copped to violations. The only convicted woman sexually abused her son and was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison.
In some cases, the predators were not Orthodox Jewish, but the children were. For instance, Hector Valerdi, a yeshiva custodian, pleaded guilty to 1st Degree sex abuse last year after he molested a 10-year-old ultra-Orthodox girl.
DA officials say victims still fear ostracism for reporting a rapist or child molester from their religious community. At least 10 cases were dismissed and seven downgraded because victims backed out or parents refused to let their kids testify.
But prosecutors believe victims have gained courage since monsters like Weberman — whose supporters allegedly tried to bribe the victim and threaten her boyfriend’s business — have been put behind bars.
In a recent case, a DA team of lawyers, a social worker and a liaison to the Orthodox community visited a home where a man allegedly sodomized two stepsons. Long talks with the family and their rabbi finally yielded their cooperation. The stepdad pleaded guilty.
“More people are willing to come forward,” said Rhonnie Jaus, chief sex-crimes prosecutor. “There’s been a change in attitude — more accept coming into the criminal justice system.”
