Ex-con arrested for having sex with 5-year-old daughter

A Lower East Side ex-convict has been arrested after admitting that he had sex with his 5-year-old daughter and later offered her up to another man, who was a sexual partner of his, police said.
"It's one of the sickest stories I have ever heard," a police source said.
The sordid odyssey of abuse surrounding the girl and her 26-year-old father, whose name is being withheld by Newsday to protect the child's identity, likely began long ago, but came to light after the father invited the 72-year-old man to have sex with her, police said.
The two had been talking on a phone chat line. On July 14, the proposal to meet the daughter at the father's Avenue D apartment was made, police said. The older man, Ariel Berlin, of the Upper West Side, visited the father's apartment some days later.
Berlin, a retired travel agent originally from Israel, accompanied the father and the daughter into a bedroom, where the father said Berlin could have sex with her as long as he wore gloves and used a condom, police said.
Berlin fondled the girl, police said. Berlin then said the environment was something he was not interested in and left, police said.
The story came to the attention of the authorities. On July 20 or 21, Special Victims Unit cops interviewed Berlin, and he told them the story, police said.
Police questioned the father on July 22, and he admitted to having sex with his daughter several times and to offering her to Berlin, the source said.
The father was charged with rape, sodomy, endangering the welfare of a child and sex abuse, police said. He was arraigned and held on $250,000 bail.
A police source said the mother of the child had been living in Massachusetts.
Thursday, police charged Berlin with sex abuse and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17. He was awaiting arraignment Thursday night.
Neighbors of Berlin, who lives at 250 W. 85th St., said he is a gentle man. "I don't think there's a bad bone in his body," said Ed Levitt, 55.
The investigation continues into the father, who served time in 1999 on a drug-sale charge. The victim is in the custody of the father's sister, police said.

Man Charged With Raping 5-Year-Old Daughter

New York Times - July 29, 2005

A Manhattan man raped his 5-year-old daughter and then offered her to another man he had met on a telephone chat line, who then joined him in sexually abusing the girl this month, the police said yesterday.
The police arrested the father, a 26-year-old man who lives in the East Village, last Friday and charged him with rape, sodomy, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a minor. He was arraigned on Saturday and ordered held in $250,000 bail, the police said. His identity was not released by the authorities in order to conceal the identity of his daughter.
Yesterday, the police arrested the second man, whom they identified as Ariel Berlin, 72, a retired travel agent who lives on the Upper West Side. He was charged with sexual abuse and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
Acting on tips, the police interviewed Mr. Berlin on July 21. They said he told them that the two men had spoken over the chat line on July 14 and had set up a sexual tryst at the father's apartment on Avenue D. That encounter did not include the girl, the police said.
Days later, however, the two men spoke on the chat line again. The 26-year-old man told Mr. Berlin that he had a 5-year-old girl with him and invited Mr. Berlin over for sex with him and the girl, the police said.
At the apartment, the father greeted Mr. Berlin dressed in woman's clothing and holding the hand of the girl, who was unclothed, the police said. The men took the girl into a bedroom, where she was molested, the police said.
At Mr. Berlin's apartment building on West 85th Street yesterday, neighbors said they were shocked to hear of the charges against him. They said he had lived in a top-floor apartment of the 16-story building for about 40 years.
Ed Levitt, who also lives on the 16th floor, said Mr. Berlin was "unkempt and always carried a briefcase."
Another neighbor, who said she knew Mr. Berlin from years of short conversations in the elevator, said he collected sheet music of popular standards. She said she could not believe the accusation.
"Just the offer would upset him, said the woman, who would not give her name. "He's not a smarmy old guy. He has a courtly manner. This would make no sense to me."

Police say the father, whose name is being withheld by authorities, and 72-year-old Ariel Berlin met in an online chat room. According to investigators, the father asked Berlin to come to his Avenue D apartment to have sex with him and his daughter.
Officials say both men abused the little girl.
The father was arrested last week and Berlin was taken in on Thursday.

A cross-dressing Manhattan father and an elderly pervert he met on a telephone chat line sexually assaulted the younger man's 5-year-old daughter, police said.

Detectives said the dad offered his little girl to Ariel Berlin, 72, of W. 85th St., a few days after the two men had sex with each other. "I have my 5-year-old daughter," police sources quoted the father as telling Berlin. "Would you like to come down and play with her, too?"

The assault on the child occurred last week in the 26-year-old father's apartment on Avenue D, cops said.

The father, whose name wasn't released to protect his daughter's identity, has been in custody for a week, charged with raping and sodomizing his child. He is being held on $250,000 bail.

Berlin was arrested yesterday on charges of sex abuse and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

Special Victims Unit cops got wind of the alleged crime - they wouldn't say how - and questioned Berlin last week. They said he told them that when he arrived at the victim's apartment, the father answered the door clad in women's clothes and holding his daughter's hand.

Berlin said he fondled the little girl as the father watched, investigators said.

When the father was questioned Friday, investigators said he corroborated Berlin's story and admitted raping and sodomizing his daughter in the past.

Police said the girl, whose mother is in Massachusetts, is in the custody of a paternal aunt who lives in the city.

"I'm shocked, totally shocked," said Berlin's neighbor Ed Levitt, 55. "He's a bit of a schlump but a real sweetheart, a nice old guy."
