A teacher from Petah Tikva was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of having committed indecent acts on students in his school in central Israel.

The suspect, who teaches Hebrew grammar, admitted to having sexual relations and reaching sexual climax with two of his pupils. The acts were committed at his home.

The arrests came after a 22-year-old man, who had been the suspect's student, recently filed a police complaint over an incident that took place six years ago.

According to police investigation, the teacher gave financial assistance to the student, thus gaining his confidence. The student told the police that the teacher was 'like a father' to him.

In an interview to Army Radio on Wednesday, the student said that he hoped every effort would be made to expel the teacher from the education system.

During his investigation, the teacher admitted to committing additional indecent acts recently. The teacher allegedly got close to youths experiencing trouble at home, took them under his patronage, and then invited them to his home to perform the indecent acts.

According to the police, the teacher also used to give haircuts to students and teachers at the school, but was told by the school management to stop. Other teachers are at the school expected to be questioned in the affair.

The suspect was brought before the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to have his remand extended.

Petah Tikva teacher indicted for raping, assault pupils
By Tsahar Rotem, Haaretz Correspondent
Ha'aretz - January 22, 2004

A teacher from Petah Tikva was indicted in Tel Aviv District Court on Thursday on charges of raping and sexually abusing 14 of his pupils.

Yoni Hovra, a 35-year-old Hebrew grammar teacher from the central town, was arrested last week on suspicion of committing indecent acts with a number of students enrolled in the high school where he teaches.

According to the charge sheet, Hovra slipped sleeping tablets into the drinks of some male students who visited him at home, so that they would not be aware of the assault.

The investigation showed that Hovra would offer the students a hot drink, into which he would slip the tablets, which he had received on prescription from a doctor.

Police believe that this explains why some of the students questioned did not remember being assaulted, and could only recall the serious physical reactions they later experienced.

The investigation also revealed that in one instance, one of the students came round from the sleeping pill while Horav was assaulting him. The teacher then offered him NIS 4,000 to keep quiet, which he refused although he did not report the incident to police until last week.

Hovra had admitted to having sexual relations with two of his students, in his home.

Investigators searched Hovra's house in Petah Tikva, after obtaining information on the existence of albums containing pornographic photos of the teacher and his students. Four such albums were found.

One complaint against the teacher was filed by a 22-year-old male. His complaint referred to an incident that took place six years ago. The student told police that the teacher supported him financially, and was "like a father" to him.

During his interrogation, the teacher admitted to having additional sexual relations with students this year.
