Statement in Response to Arrest of Robert Singer
National Children's Museum - November 6, 2007

Today, officials from the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement informed us that an employee, Mr. Robert Singer, had been arrested on charges of distributing child pornography over the Internet.

We are horrified by the charges. This news is deeply upsetting to the National Children's Museum family.

We have pledged our complete cooperation to law enforcement officials, and will support their ongoing investigation in any way possible.

We are taking immediate action. Pending legal proceedings, Mr. Singer has been suspended, effective immediately, and is barred from the property.

At its essence, the National Children's Museum is about enriching the lives of children. We are educators, child welfare advocates, and parents. Anyone who does anything that might endanger the welfare of a child has no place here. Harming children is against everything we stand for as an organization, and as individuals.

The National Children's Museum facility has been closed to the public since 2004. The Museum operates from administrative offices as we work to build a new facility scheduled to open in 2012.

We will comment further as additional information becomes available.

Arrest Made In Child Pornography Case
Associated Press - November 6, 2007

An employee of the National Children's Museum in Washington was arrested Tuesday on child pornography charges, accused of using his work computer to send explicit images to others including an undercover New York City detective.

Robert A. Singer, 49, was arrested at his home in Falls Church, Virginia, on charges that he sent the pornographic images to a detective posing as a 33-year-old mother and her 12-year-old daughter, U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia said.

Robert Singer was identified in the criminal complaint as a spokesman for the Capital Children's Museum, which closed in September 2004 to prepare for renovations. The museum, which plans to reopen in 2012 as the National Children's Museum, said in a statement that officials were ``horrified'' by the events.

The complaint filed in Manhattan federal court said Robert Singer used the screen name Badboy2at to initiate contact with the detective in a chat room. Singer sent the detective about 80 explicit images of child pornography from his work and home computers, the complaint said.

The images sent from Robert Singer's museum computer depicted sexual acts between minors and adults, the complaint said. Singer also sent the daughter two images with instructions to ``just delete it when you are done.''

Robert Singer also exchanged images with other people while sending the pornography to the detective in August and September, the complaint said.

Singer was charged with five counts of distributing child pornography in interstate commerce. The National Children's Museum employee was detained Tuesday pending a bail hearing later in the week. If convicted, Singer could face a prison term of up to 40 years on the most serious charges.

A man who answered the phone at Robert Singer's residence Tuesday said that there was no one to immediately comment on the arrest and that it was not clear who his lawyer might be. Later in the day, a message left at the number for comment was not immediately returned.

The complaint also accused Robert Singer of boasting in his e-mail communications that he worked near ``all your favorite'' monuments.

The museum's offices are a mile from the Washington monument, a mile and a half from the White House and a little over a mile from the Capitol, the complaint said.

The museum said in its statement it would fully cooperate with law enforcement and had suspended Robert Singer and barred him from the property.

``Anyone who does anything that might endanger the welfare of a child has no place here,'' it said. ``Harming children is against everything we stand for as an organization and as individuals.''

National Children's Museum Worker Caught in Child Sex Sting

By Pierre Thomas
ABC News - November 6, 2007

An employee at the National Children's Museum has been charged with distributing child pornography.
The government alleges that from August 2007 to September 2007, Robert A. Singer engaged in several instant messaging "chats" and electronic mail communications over the Internet with individuals whom he believed to be a 33-year-old mother (the mother) and her 12-year-old daughter (the daughter).
There was a catch though: Singer, prosecutors say, was actually dealing with a detective with the New York City Police Department, who was posing as both the mother and the daughter.
According to a government complaint, on five separate occasions in August 2007, Singer, 49, allegedly sent several images of child pornography over the Internet to the mother and the daughter, including images depicting sexual acts between minors and adults and images depicting known victims of child exploitation.
In his electronic communications with the daughter, police say, Singer pretended to be a 15-year-old boy. Shortly after allegedly sending the daughter two images depicting child pornography, Singer instructed the daughter to "just delete it when you are done," police say.
A search of an AOL account led police to Singer and other child porn images. Singer was arrested in Falls Church, Va. If convicted, he faces up to 180 years in prison.
He is scheduled to appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia later today.
Garcia praised the investigative work of ICE and the NYPD in this case and also thanked the Bronx District Attorney's Office for its help and cooperation and for referring the case to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John P. Cronan is in charge of the prosecution.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
ABC News has not reached Singer for comment on the charges.

Children's Museum employee distributed child porn, officials say
CNN - November 6, 2007

The chief operating officer of the National Children's Museum was arrested Tuesday and is charged with distributing child pornography over the Internet, authorities said.

Robert A. Singer is accused of sending images depicting child pornography to people he believed to be a 12-year-old girl and her 33-year-old mother, according to a statement issued by U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia of the Southern District of New York.

In reality he was communicating with an undercover detective for the New York Police Department.

Some of the pornographic images were sent from Singer's computer at the museum, according to an affidavit filed in support of the charges by a special agent who investigates child pornography and child exploitation for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
The Washington museum posted a message on its Web site saying officials there are "horrified" by news of Singer's arrest. They reported that he has been suspended from his post, effective immediately, and is barred from the property.

Singer, 49, was arrested at his home in Falls Church, Virginia, by federal agents, according to the prosecutors' statement. Authorities allege he engaged in several instant messaging "chats" and e-mail communications with the undercover detective, posing as the woman and her daughter, from August to September.

He is charged with five counts of distributing child pornography in interstate commerce. If convicted on each count, he would face a sentence of up to 140 years in prison -- up to 20 years for the first count and up to 40 years for each additional count, prosecutors said.

Singer allegedly initiated contact with the undercover detective, posing as the mother, in an America On Line chat room called "Cuties." The chat room attracts people who "are known to trade in pornographic images, including child pornography," according to an affidavit filed in the case by a special agent who investigates child pornography and child exploitation for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"On five separate occasions in August 2007, Singer sent several images of child pornography over the Internet to the mother and the daughter, including images depicting sexual acts between minors and adults and images depicting known victims of child exploitation," prosecutors said.

In his communications with the supposed daughter, Singer pretended to be a 15-year-old boy, authorities said. In August 2007, he sent her two images featuring child pornography, according to the affidavit, with the instruction, "just delete it when you are done."

A search of Singer's AOL account activity showed that from July to September, he sent about 80 images featuring child pornography to people including the detective, authorities said in the statement. Also, the search revealed that he had received about 10 images and one video depicting child pornography.

Singer was expected to appear before a U.S. magistrate judge later Tuesday.

He is identified in the complaint as a spokesman for the National Children's Museum, but a spokeswoman who asked not to be identified said he was promoted to chief operating officer within the past few months. He has been employed by the museum for four years, she said.

In a written statement, the museum said it was notified by the Department of Homeland Security and ICE of Singer's arrest. "We are horrified by the charges," the statement said. "This news is deeply upsetting to the National Children's Museum family."

"As its essence, the National Children's Museum is about enriching the lives of children," the statement said. "We are educators, child advocates and parents. Anyone who does anything that might endanger the welfare of a child has no place here. Harming children is against everything we stand for as an organization and as individuals."

The museum, formerly known as the Capital Children's Museum, has been closed to the public since 2004, and operates from administrative offices, the statement said. A new facility is being built and is scheduled to open in 2012.

Children's museum employee arrested on child porn charges
By James Gordon Meek and Alison Gendar
New York Daily News - November 7, 2007

A top executive at the National Children's Museum was busted Tuesday on charges he emailed kiddie porn to an undercover Bronx cop posing as a 12-year-old girl.

"Pleasure to meet a fellow luver of younger erotica," Robert Singer, 49, the chief operating officer for the National Children's Museum, allegedly wrote in an email to the undercover officer.

Using the screen name "Badboy2," Singer cruised an AOL chat room called "Cuties," where he bumped into the undercover officer, posing as the child and her 33-year-old mother, authorities said.

"Luv trading pics of cuties," Singer, a married father of two, allegedly wrote the cop on Aug. 3.

Over the next two months, Singer emailed pornographic images and messages to the cop from his home computer in Falls Church, Va., and from his computer at the Washington, D.C. offices of the National Children's Museum, police said.

"We are horrified by the charges," officials of the Children's Museum posted on their Web site.

The museum, dedicated to "shaping the lives of children across the country," is slated to open in 2012.

"Mr. Singer has been suspended, effective immediately, and is barred from the property," museum officials said.

"Anyone who does anything that might endanger the welfare of a child has no place here. Harming children is against everything we stand for."

Singer emailed more than 80 pornographic images to the cop, including photos of children as young as 5, police said.

When the undercover cop asked on Aug. 9 how old two girls in a photo were, Singer wrote back "10 and 5?"

Part of the cop's cover story was that the she had two daughters, ages 9 and 12. Singer later asked to contact the 12-year-old daughter and sent the supposed girl photos of of young girls having sex with adult men, police said.

"Just delete it when you are done," he allegedly wrote.

Several of the children in the images are known victims of child exploitation according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Neighbors in Singer's suburban Virginia neighborhood said he had a daughter in junior high and another in college.

He was arrested at his home and charged with five counts of distributing child porn. He faces up to 20 years in prison, if convicted. He is being held in Virginia pending a bail hearing. Singer's lawyer Steven Briglia, could not be reached for comment.

Museum Officer Is Accused Of Trading Child Pornography
By Joseph Goldstein
The New York Sun - November 7, 2007

The chief operating officer at the National Children's Museum in Washington, D.C., is facing charges that he traded images of child pornography.

Robert Singer, 49, was arrested yesterday in Virginia as part of a sting operation run by a Bronx detective with the New York Police Department. A call for comment at Mr. Singer's home in Falls Church, Va., was not returned. His lawyer did not immediately return a call left at his office.

"We are horrified by the charges" and will cooperate with the investigation, the museum said in a statement posted on its Web site. While the statement did not disclose Mr. Singer's position at the museum, one source told The New York Sun that he is the chief operating officer.

Mr. Singer sent about 80 images containing child pornography to the detective and others in August and September, according to a criminal complaint unsealed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

Mr. Singer contacted the NYPD detective in an America Online chat room known to authorities as a place where pornography is traded, the criminal complaint said. The detective was posing in the chat room both as a 33-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl, and Mr. Singer sent e-mail messages to each containing several images depicting children engaged in sexual acts, the criminal complaint said.

Presented with a search warrant last month, AOL gave federal authorities a disk containing e-mails from an account linked to Mr. Singer's name, the complaint said. Mr. Singer is charged with distributing child pornography in interstate commerce and faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
