Follow-Up on the News; Prosecutor's Vow
By RICHARD HAITCH
New York Times - February 21, 1982
When Eugene Gold stepped down last December after 13 years as District Attorney
of Brooklyn - the nation's third largest prosecutor's office - he said he
wanted to devote his future to helping the Jewish people.
He and his wife are permanent residents of Jerusalem today.
''It's very, very exciting,'' the 57-year-old Mr. Gold says. ''Everyone here
is very much involved.'' Since his arrival in the last month, he says, he
has been working with the Jewish National Fund and the Jewish Agency on plans
for a Third World Conference on Soviet Jewry.
''The objective,'' he says, ''is immigration of Jews who would like to leave
the Soviet Union and the achievement of cultural and religious freedom for
those who remain.''
From a prosecutor's viewpoint, Israel is fairly quiet, Mr. Gold indicates.
Noting that its population is roughly half that of New York City, he says:
''In New York City last year there were better than 1,800 murders. In Israel,
including murder by terrorists, the total number of murders was 52.''

Gold Wins a Delay In Molesting
Case
New York Times - September 17, 1983
The preliminary hearing scheduled yesterday in Nashville into charges of
aggravated rape against Eugene Gold, the former Brooklyn District Attorney,
was postponed until Oct. 20.
The postponement was granted after an informal series of meetings between
Mr. Gold's lawyer and the father of the 10-year-old girl Mr. Gold is accused
of molesting.
The lawyer, Thomas Puccio, would would not say what discussed at the meetings.
''I've talked with the D.A., I've talked with the girl's father,'' Mr. Puccio
said. ''I don't think it's appropriate to say anything beyond that. All the
meetings that were held were routine.''
Mr. Gold is accused of fondling the girl in her hotel room at about midnight
on Aug. 17 while he was attending a district attorney's conference in Nashville.
The girl's father is a district attorney.

Gold Gets Probation In Fondling of Child, Agrees to Treatment
New York Times - October 21, 1983
Eugene Gold, the former Brooklyn District Attorney, admitted today that he
had fondled the 10-year-old daughter of an Alabama prosecutor and agreed
to undergo psychiatric treatment to avoid prosecution.
In exchange for his admission, Mr. Gold was placed on probation for two years.
If he remains under psychiatric care during the probation period, the
aggravated-rape charge against him will be dropped, Nashville prosecutors
said. Conviction on the charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Mr. Gold, 59, signed a statement acknowledging that he fondled the girl on
Aug. 16 while attending a national district attorneys convention in Nashville.
He had previously denied it. 'Routine Way' of Handling Case
Mr. Gold said in the statement that he ''engaged in unlawful sexual conduct''
with the girl when he first met her on a bus trip during the convention.
He later ''engaged in unlawful sexual fondling'' of the child in her room
at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, the statement went on.
Thomas H. Shriver, the Nashville District Attorney, said the agreement with
Mr. Gold was ''a fairly routine way of handling this type of case.'' He said
the girl's family had approved the agreement because they ''felt that a trial
would be an additional trauma to a child who already has been subjected to
trauma.''
Mr. Shriver said he believed that Mr. Gold would seek psychiatric treatment
in Israel, where he has a home.
After signing the agreement in a Nashville court, Mr. Gold told reporters
that he was ''very, very relieved to have this behind me.''
He walked out of the court arm-in- arm with his wife, (NAME REMOVED). ''I've
known my husband since I'm 16 years old, and we have had 36 fantastic years
together,'' she said. ''We plan to continue.''
Mr. Gold was Brooklyn's chief prosecutor from 1968 to 1981 and helped prosecute
the ''Son of Sam'' murder cases. In May 1981, after four terms as Brooklyn
District Attorney, he announced he would not seek re-election and planned
to devote himself to Jewish charitable causes.
