Former camp counselor in Pike County, Pa., accused of groping young boy
By Beth Brelje
Pocono Record - January 8, 2013
MILFORD, Pa. — A man who attended Camp Menachem summer camp in Laxawaxen Township in 2001 told police that a counselor sexually abused him while he was a young camper there.

As a result of that disclosure, an arrest warrant was obtained for former camp counselor Aryeh Goodman, 30, of East Brunswick, N.J., according to a state police report.

Goodman was taken into custody Jan. 4 by the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office and is awaiting extradition to Pike County, according to a police report. Goodman is accused of indecent assault.

In May, the victim reported to police a series of incidents that happened at the camp when he was 12 years old.

According to the police affidavit of probable cause, the victim told police he was still in school in the spring of 2001 when Goodman asked him if he would like to attend Camp Menachem. If he decided to go, Goodman would make sure that he was the victim’s counselor. The victim told police that he and about 15 other boys attended camp as a group and they stayed in a large area with bunk beds. Goodman stayed in the same area and his bunk was diagonal to the victim’s bunk.

The victim told police that they had only been in camp a few nights when he woke up to find a man in bed with him. The man had his hands down the victim’s pants and was touching him.

He did not know what to do so he got up and went to the bathroom and did not say a word, according to the affidavit.

The victim reported that the touching happened at least 10 different times in the bunk area and that he was positive that it was Goodman who was touching him.

The victim also reported that while on an overnight trip at another location, Goodman sat next to him on the bus and covered their genital areas with a sweater and again began touching the victim’s penis as the bus drove to the destination, the affidavit said.

When they arrived at the overnight location, the victim told police, Goodman zipped their sleeping bags together and they slept in the same sleeping bag. That night, Goodman took the victim’s hand and made him touch Goodman’s penis, the victim told police. He reported feeling disgusted and pulled his hand away.

In October, a detective with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office assisted with a recorded 24-minute conversation between the victim and Goodman. In the recording, the victim called Goodman and told him that he wanted to talk and clear some things up.

Goodman told the victim that he thinks about the incidents a lot and that he is embarrassed by what happened. Goodman told the victim that an apology is not enough and asked is there is anything he could offer to make the situation better. He apologized repeatedly and said he was sorry for hurting the victim, according to the police report.

In the recording, Goodman said that he did things to the victim that violated him and that he did not know why, the police report said.

E.B. rabbi arrested following accusation
By James MeEvoy
Sentinel - January 8, 2013

EAST BRUNSWICK — Rabbi Aryeh Goodman, director of the East Brunswick Chabad, has been arrested by the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a Pennsylvania State Police report obtained by Greater Media Newspapers, a male told authorities in the summer of 2012 that he had been assaulted by Goodman, 30, while he was attending Camp Menachem in Lackawaxen Township, Pike County, Pa., in 2001. Goodman was a counselor at the camp.

The police report describes the nature of the allegation as an “indecent assault.”

Subsequent to obtaining the police report, Greater Media Newspapers obtained an affidavit of probable cause from the Pike County, Pa., District Attorney’s Office. The affidavit describes details of the alleged assault at the camp. The affidavit indicates that the person who made the complaint against Goodman in 2012 was 12 years old when he attended camp in 2001.

An arrest warrant was issued for Goodman on Jan. 3 and he was taken into custody by officers from the sheriff’s office on Jan. 4. As of Jan. 8, Goodman remained incarcerated at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick, and was awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania.

Middlesex County Sheriff Mildred Scott said she could not say whether her office would be investigating Goodman.

In October 2011, the Chabad organization entered into a lease agreement with the township to lease the former McGinnis School on Hardenburg Lane and transform the former school into a community education center.

A woman who answered the phone at the community education center this week said the organization had no comment.

Chabad of East Brunswick rabbi faces sex charges
The director of Chabad of East Brunswick has been arrested on child molestation charges that allegedly occurred almost 12 years earlier while he was counselor at a Chabad camp in Pennsylvania.

Rabbi Aryeh Goodman, 30, was arrested Jan. 3 on a warrant out of the Blooming Grove barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police, alleging several counts of indecent assault on a person less than 13 years of age, police spokesperson Trooper Adam Reed told NJJN.

The barracks is in Pikes County, where the assault on the boy is alleged to have occurred at Camp Menachem in Lackawaxen Township on June 1, 2001.

Although reports have said Goodman was taken into custody by the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Department and was being held in the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania, a jail spokesperson told NJJN he had never been there. The Pikes County Correctional Facility also said he had never been held there.

Calls and faxed inquiries for further details to the Pikes County Magistrate’s Office, which confirmed it is handling the case, were not returned by press time.

Goodman, the son of Rabbi Boruch and Sarah Goodman, grew up in Highland Park. The elder Goodman is the campus director at Chabad House at Rutgers University. Chabad of East Brunswick is affiliated with Chabad House-Lubavitch Inc. at Rutgers University.

Goodman and his wife, Ora Malka, took over Chabad of East Brunswick in 2006, focusing on educating children. It operates the Chai Central Hebrew School for children ages six-14, stressing “the inculcation of Jewish values and ethics” and “mutual tolerance and respect for fellow human beings as basic principles of the Jewish faith” It also offers bar and bat mitzva instruction and operates the Chai Early Childhood Center.

It also ran a Friendship Club, providing support for special-needs children, their parents, and siblings that was disbanded last year.

News of the arrest spread quickly via social media, producing shock. Michael Goldstein of East Brunswick, whose 12-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter attend school at the Chabad’s Hebrew school, doesn’t believe the charges. He said others who know Goodman share his sentiments.

“My children love him,” said Goldstein. “I completely trust him with my kids. I think he is a warm, honest, good man and one of the most decent and spiritual people I have ever met. I don’t understand how such horrible charges can be brought against such a wonderful person.”

Added Goldstein: “I truly love him and consider him and the whole Goodman family part of my family. He is my rabbi, and my heart is breaking. I just hope he’s able to clear himself and move on with his life. I still hope he will do my son’s bar mitzva in November.”

Attempts to reach family members and obtain comment were unsuccessful.

Goodman founded the annual Good Deed Awards, honoring teen community service leaders from across the state and bringing together MTV stars, elected officials, and state executives. This year’s ceremony was held in the Assembly chambers of the Statehouse.

Goodman has served as chaplain at Chelsea assisted living in East Brunswick.

Last year, the East Brunswick Township Council allowed the Goodmans to pay $35,000 annually on a 30-year lease to renovate and use the shuttered McGinnis School as a community education center. Several weeks ago Goodman told NJJN he was working with township officials and expected to have the building up to code within the coming weeks.

Soon after taking over in 2006, Goodman had said he began to focus on programming for children, running a sleepover camp the previous summer in Keansburg for 25 children. Over this first winter he took another group of young people snow tobogganing in Pennsylvania.

Rabbi Aryeh Goodman - Alleged Sex Offender
EAST BRUNSWICK — A local rabbi is awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania on charges involving the sexual assault of a minor in 2001, Pennsylvania State Trooper Connie Devens said Wednesday morning.

Rabbi Aryeh Goodman, 30, of East Brunswick has been charged with 12 counts of indecent assault, according to the police criminal complaint.

Goodman was arrested Jan 4 after the victim, a male who was a juvenile at the time of the incident, came forward last May, claiming he had been assaulted by Goodman while attending Camp Menachem in Lackawaxen Township, Pa., in 2001, according to a news release by the investigating officer, Trooper Sandra A. Vanluvender.

According to the release, the victim was a camper at the sleepaway camp in Pike County, Pa., and told authorities that an adult counselor assaulted him nearly 12 years ago. According to the complaint, the victim, known as juvenile (NAME REMOVED), was 12 at the time of the alleged assault.

On Jan. 3, an arrest warrant was obtained for the adult counselor, identified as Goodman, and he was taken into custody the next day by the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office. Goodman is incarcerated at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick while awaiting extradition.

Goodman, who is director of Chabad of East Brunswick, runs community service, women, children, holiday and faith-based programs out of a Lexington Downs Shopping Center storefront at 3 Lexington Ave.

As part of Chabad of East Brunswick, Goodman established the Good Deed Awards, which recognize New Jersey teenagers for independent good deeds that contribute to their communities’ quality of life.

A woman who answered the phone at the Chabad of East Brunswick said the organization had no comment concerning Goodman’s arrest.
Chabad is a large missionary Chasidic movement in Orthodox Judaism, known for its hospitality, technological expertise, optimism and emphasis on religious study. It is one of the world’s larger and best-known Chasidic movements, with official headquarters in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Raised in Highland Park, Goodman is married to Ora Malka Goodman and was assigned to Chabad of East Brunswick in 2006 when he was 24. He is also the son of Rabbi Baruch and Sarah Goodman, known as the “Rebbe and Rebbetzin,” of Chabad House at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. The elder Goodmans also are the Chabad connection to Middlesex County College in Edison.  Chabad House said Rabbi Yosef Z. Carlebach was not available.

According to the complaint, the victim, who now is an adult, reported that the series of incidents took place during the summer of 2001, when he was a camper the all-boys Camp Menachem.

The affidavit of probable cause said the victim explained that while he was in school in the spring of 2001, Goodman approached him and asked if he would like to attend camp at Camp Menachem. According to the document, Goodman explained he was a counselor at the camp and should the victim decide to attend, Goodman would make sure he was his counselor.

The victim related that he attended the camp and Goodman was his counselor during the summer of 2001. Approximately 15 boys were in his camp group and they shared a large bunk area with bunk beds. The victim said Goodman stayed in the same area as the boys and his bunk was diagonal to the victim’s bunk.

The affidavit discloses that the victim said he woke up more than 10 times to find Goodman in bed with him. Not knowing what to do, the victim said he got up and went to the bathroom and did not say a word. The affidavit said that the first time the victim believed it was Goodman who touched him, but he was not positive. Touching occurred on at least 10 occasions in the bunk area and the victim was positive that it was Goodman who was touching him on the other occasions, the affidavit said.
Additionally, the affidavit stated more inappropriate touching occurred during a bus trip to a different overnight location. Further, the victim said that at the overnight location, Goodman zipped their sleeping bags together and they both slept in the same sleeping bag, where the victim said there was more inappropriate touching.

According to the affidavit, on Oct. 19, 2012, Detective Jeannette Sbordone from the Office of the District Attorney, Kings County, Brooklyn, N.Y., assisted with a 24-minute recorded conversation between the victim and Goodman. In the conversation, the victim informed Goodman that he wanted to clear up some things.

Goodman, who put the victim on hold for about a minute, came back to the phone call and told the victim that he thinks about the incidents a lot and that he is embarrassed by what happened, the affidavit said. Goodman told the victim that an apology is not enough and asked if there is anything he could offer to make the situation better. In the conversation, Goodman apologized repeatedly, said he was sorry for hurting the victim and that he did things to the victim that should have never happened to someone that age, according to the affidavit.

In the recording, Goodman said that he did things to the victim that violated him and that he touched the victim inappropriately. When asked repeatedly by the victim why he did it, Goodman said that he did not know why, the affidavit said.

“I'm shocked about it,” said Sara Englard of East Brunswick, a member of the Orthodox synagogue Young Israel of East Brunswick. “This is out of character for him.”
Englard said she had spoken about it with her son, Shmueli Englard, 21, who has been a camper at a local Chabad camp.

“He is also shocked,” she said. “I would guess that everyone would be stunned. Knowing him and his family, it just doesn’t make sense. It’s also hard for me to process since we had recently spoken to him. It’s hard to juxtapose it all. Not to belittle the person, but I so hope that it’s not true. His wife and family are so lovely.”

Local Modern Orthodox members said an email from Rabbi Jay Weinstein of Young Israel of and the Board President Aron Adams was sent out Tuesday.

The contents of the email said that judgment should be reserved because Goodman is innocent until proven guilty and that Young Israel preschool and camp take measures to ensure that this doesn’t happen here. The email also offered several websites to visit if discussions with children were necessary.

Religious leader awaits extradition
By Cheryl Makin
Daily Record - January 10, 2013

EAST BRUNSWICK — Members of the local Jewish community are expressing dismay and surprise at the report of a well-known rabbi’s arrest on charges of sexual assault involving a minor.

Rabbi Aryeh Goodman, 30, of East Brunswick was charged with 12 counts of indecent assault, according to the police criminal complaint. He is awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania on charges involving the sexual assault of a minor in 2001, Pennsylvania State Trooper Connie Devens said Wednesday morning.

“I’m shocked about it,” said Sara Englard of East Brunswick, a member of the Orthodox synagogue Young Israel of East Brunswick. “This is out of character for him.”

Englard said she had spoken about it with her son, (NAME REMOVED), 21, who has been a camper at a local Chabad camp.

Goodman, who is director of Chabad of East Brunswick, runs community service, women, children, holiday and faith-based programs out of a Lexington Downs Shopping Center storefront at 3 Lexington Ave.

David Schneider, an East Brunswick photographer who has worked with Goodman and his Good Deed Awards program, wants to make sure the victim’s story is verified before passing judgment.

“My reaction is he’s a guy who really had done a lot of good,” Schneider said. “There are a lot of potential witnesses. I would want to make sure this kid accusing him is of sound mind. This was 12 years ago, too. I guess what I’m saying is I would believe Rabbi Goodman before I believe someone who comes out with this 12 years after it happened, especially since it didn’t happen in private, but with 15 other guys in close proximity.”
Goodman was arrested Friday after the victim, a juvenile male at the time of the incident, came forward last May, claiming he had been assaulted by Goodman while attending Camp Menachem in Lackawaxen Township, Pa., in 2001, according to a prepared statement from the investigating officer, Trooper Sandra A. Vanluvender.

According to the statement, the victim was a camper at the sleepaway camp in Pike County, Pa., and told authorities that an adult counselor assaulted him nearly 12 years ago. According to the complaint, the victim, known as juvenile (NAME REMOVED), was 12 at the time of the alleged assault.

  1. The temples were destroyed because of Sinat Chinam, hatred of Jews for one another.

We live in a world of sinat chinum in Judaism. The temples were destroyed because Jews hated each other. I fear another Holocaust is around the corner if we Jews do not unite. Anti-Semitism is rampant in Europe and many countries are becoming Judenrein. Israel faces terrible enemies . Extremist Muslims are the new Nazis AND THEY DO NOT HIDE THEIR DESIRE TO DESTROY ISRAEL AND JEWS WORLDWIDE. Why are we Jews so eager to wash our dirty laundry in public for the entire world to see.

Regarding Rabbi Aryeh Goodman, it does not matter whether he is Chabad or not as long as that is what he considers himself. Regarding whether he believes The Rebbe was the Mashiach, that is his opinion and his right to believe. This does not pertain to his innocence or guilt. There have been enough stories regarding the alleged incident. The same is true regarding the incidents at Yeshiva University. Let the courts decide guilt or innocence. Must we give anti-Semites more ammunition to hate us and want to destroy us. I know there will be those who may disagree with me and attack me using an alias. By now my readers know I say what I believe. I have been attacked in the press by an individual in this community stating I have no following. I speak out because it is the right thing to do.

  3. People attack "Rabbi Dr." Rosenberg's posts for a reason. He advocates keeping abuse quiet, slipping it under the covers. He gives the rationale of not giving anti-Semites ammunition. That is a sad excuse and poor reasoning. Anti-Semites will always exist and will always find ammunition. It is clear he cares little for the victims. He does not understand that publicizing these events will educate people to look out for the dangers and even dissuade the offenders, or at least make them think twice.
