Father suspected of murdering, molesting daughterBy YAAKOV KATZ
Jerusalem Post - Dec. 24, 2004 Updated Dec. 25, 2004

Police said Saturday they are investigating suspicions that Levy Lalik - arrested Thursday for allegedly murdering his two-month-old daughter Mihal – also sexually molested her. On Friday, the Tel Aviv Magistrates Court extended Lalik's remand by an additional 10 days. The remand of Sofia – Michal's mother – was extended by four days.

Late Thursday night, police received an emergency call from an anonymous caller regarding an infant whose life was said to be at risk in Tel Aviv's Hatikva neighborhood. A police unit rushed to the scene and discovered Mihal lying unconscious. Doctors who arrived shortly after pronounced the child's death.

Police said Saturday they discovered bruises all over the child's body including the area surrounding her sexual organs leading them to believe she had been sexually abused.

Police detained the infant's parents - Levy and Sofia Lalik – new immigrants from Russia who barely speak Hebrew. The father initially told police he was feeding his daughter when she began to choke. He said that due to his poor Hebrew he called an acquaintance to alert the police.

During his interrogation on Friday, Lalik, 27, did not confess to murdering his daughter but did take responsibility for the bruises on her body claiming they were all done in an effort "to calm her down."

During Friday's remand hearing, police representative Avidor Barash called the case one of the most "horrific murders" he has ever encountered.

"This is one of the most horrific cases I have ever encountered," Barash said. "There are not enough words to describe the horror and the severe bruises covering her body."

Another police officer, who viewed the infant's body, said "it is impossible to imagine how someone could do this to their own child."

Man remanded for suspected murder of 2-month-old daughter
By Roni Singer
Haaretz - Sun., December 26, 2004 Tevet 14, 5765

The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court on Friday extended for 10 days the remand of a man suspected of murdering his two-month-old daughter on Thursday. Before the court hearing, Levy Lalik, 27, was sent for preliminary psychiatric observation at Abarbanel hospital.

The court also extended by four days the remand of the baby's mother, Sophia Lalik, suspected of failure to prevent a crime.

Police further suspect that the baby was a victim of sexual abuse by her father. This suspicion arose Thursday night after an initial pathology examination revealed that the baby had severe anal bruising.

In his preliminary police interrogation, the father incriminated himself by confirming that he had shaken his daughter, but did not confess to killing her. He explained the anal bruising as a result of trying to take the baby's temperature with a thermometer.

On Friday the father's lawyer, Yaakov Shklar, announced that his client was recanting all admissions, which he said had been made out of fear.

On Thursday evening, the father got his wife, who was away from home, to call for an ambulance after allegedly noticing that his daughter wasn't breathing. Paramedics who arrived on the scene found the baby in her bed, unconscious, not breathing, and with a severe head injury. An initial examination also revealed burn marks on her chest. These findings, along with the apartment's state of neglect, led them to call in the police.

A pathology examination suggested that the baby had died as a result of a criminal act by the father. At first the father said that he had fed his daughter, put her to bed half an hour later, and then looked in on her a short while after that, whereupon he noticed she wasn't breathing. He immediately called the mother, who was at a friend's home outside Tel Aviv, and she called a friend who summoned an ambulance.

Police investigators rejected this story because the medical examiner had identified additional bruising all over the baby's body. The father was arrested at the scene and the mother was picked up later that night on suspicion of failing to report child abuse.

The woman told investigators that she had previously complained about her husband's violent behavior toward her, and said that she had confided in the social worker at the absorption center where the couple lived upon coming to Israel last summer. Shortly afterward, while pregnant, she even left her husband but eventually came back. Nonetheless, the police suspect that the woman knew her husband was beating their baby girl and did nothing to prevent it.

"We're dealing with a suspect who was cool tempered under interrogation and astounded investigators by the manner in which he expressed himself, the way he described the case," the police representative said at Friday's remand hearing.

The Laliks immigrated from the former Soviet Union last August, and only about a week ago moved to an apartment on Hefer Street in south Tel Aviv, where the suspected murder took place.

Man gets maximum 20-year sentence for killing daughter
By Nir Hasson
Haaretz - Jan. 9, 2007

A Tel Aviv man was sentenced to 20 years in prison yesterday for killing his 2-month-old daughter in 2004.

The three judges of the Tel Aviv District Court ruled on the maximum sentence for Levy Lalik, despite the fact that the conviction for manslaughter was made as part of a plea bargain.

According to the indictment, on December 23, 2004, Lalik - a 29-year-old immigrant from the former Soviet Union - was left home alone with the infant for several hours.

During that time, Lalik allegedly drank to the point of intoxication. When the baby began to cry he pinched her, applied pressure to various parts of her body, crushed her head and forcibly twisted her legs.

As a result, the baby suffered several injuries and died of her wounds.

Lalik was initially charged with murder. At first he tried to claim that the death was the result of an accident, saying he fell on the infant.

Later, he changed his plea to manslaughter, but judges rejected his testimony on two occasions.

In the first instance, Lalik pleaded insanity, and in the second, that the baby's death was the result of an accident.

Last September, Lalik confessed to manslaughter. The judges accepted the plea and issued a conviction.

The state asked for the maximum penalty, although defense attorney Yaakov Shklar asked to consider the fact that Lalik was intoxicated at the time of the incident and was experiencing difficulty integrating into Israeli society. He also noted that Lalik had no prior criminal record, and emphasized that he confessed to his own actions.

The judges rejected the attorney's claims, saying they were dwarfed by Lalik's deeds.

"The abusive actions of the accused toward the infant came in response to her crying and they became worse over time. The killing was not carried out in one thrust. Who knows and who can imagine the terrible physical and emotional suffering the infant underwent until her death. Instead of extending help and trying to save her, the accused expressed no remorse and assaulted her body, even though he knew she was dead," their statement said.

"The incident before us is one of those serious incidents that justify and demand maximum punishment," it said.
