Child sex suspect arrested in Ashkelon

Ashkelon police have arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of sexually abusing a four-year-old girl at a city pre-school complex. He was employed at the facility, which has two nursery schools.
The girl's parents filed a complaint with police after noticing their daughter was behaving oddly. The girl was questioned by authorities, after which police detained the suspect on Monday.

It was not the first time the suspect has been accused of pedophile crimes - a month ago he was questioned about a similar alleged offense in Eilat. He was freed after being held in house arrest and no indictment has emerged from the Eilat case.

In Ashkelon, he was employed as a maintenance worker in offices of the Conservative congregation "Netzah Yisrael," which runs the two pre-schools. The man apparently used his access to the nursery schools to establish contact with the children.

Ashkelon police yesterday said they are investigating possible negligence by those responsible for the pre-school. "Had they investigated if worker had a criminal past, as is done with every worker in the education system, they would have got the required answers," said police Chief Superintendent Eitan Gadsi.

Parents of other children in the pre-schools turned to police yesterday saying they feared the suspect might also have sexually abused their children.
