Man charged with assault of two boys

MOUNT HOLLY - A former youth counselor has been charged with sexually assaulting two teenage boys, who are now adults, in his Evesham home, authorities said.
Eric Dorfner, 41, of Wagon Wheel Court was charged Wednesday with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, said Detective Sgt. Jack Smith, a spokesman for the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.
Charges of distributing child pornography on the Internet also were filed against Dorfner, Smith said. The charges are unrelated to the alleged assaults.
Dorfner faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the charges.
The alleged assaults occurred between the summer of 1995 and March 1999, when the victims were between the ages of 14 and 18, Smith said.
Dorfner met the boys when he was a youth counselor at the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, Woodcrest chapter, which is based at the Katz Jewish Community Center in Cherry Hill, Smith said.
None of the assaults occurred during sanctioned B'nai B'rith activities or on its property, Smith said.
Smith said Dorfner, who has been a volunteer counselor with the organization for about eight years, resigned in May.
An investigation began in July when one of the victims told detectives Dorfner sexually assaulted him on numerous occasions when he was between the ages of 14 and 18, Smith said.
Last month, investigators interviewed a second man who claimed had been assaulted by Dorfner when he was a youth group member, the detective said. The alleged assaults occurred when the victim was be-tween 14 and 16 years old, Smith said.
The victims viewed pornographic videos and photographs of children engaged in sexual acts with adult males, according to Smith.
Earlier this month, detectives learned that the FBI had initiated a separate investigation into allegations Dorfner sent child pornography on the Internet to an undercover FBI agent, Smith said.
Smith said the child pornography did not involve the two victims.
During Dorfner's first court appearance since his arrest, Superior Court Judge Thomas S. Smith Jr. yesterday maintained the $100,000 bail set Wednesday night by another judge. He also warned Dorfner not to have contact with the victims or children if he is released on bail from the Burlington County Jail.
Dorfner is employed as a sales representative for Mark Four Enterprises, a home remodeling company in Cinnaminson, Smith said.
A spokeswoman for the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey said the agency would have no comment on the case, but would continue to work with authorities.
Smith said the investigation is continuing.

Eric Dorfner, 41, of 115 Wagon Wheel Court in Evesham, was arrested Wednesday evening after a joint investigation by local police, the Burlington County prosecutor and the FBI. He was charged with aggravated sexual assault and distributing child pornography.
According to reports, the man assaulted at least two youths over a five-year period. He also reportedly showed them pornographic pictures and videos of children engaged in sexual acts with men.
Separate from this, Dorfner also allegedly sent child pornography from his computer to an undercover special agent over the Internet, and is therefore being investigated by the FBI.
Authorities said the investigation on Dorfner began on July 29 of this year after a male victim, who is now an adult, told police Dorfner sexually assaulted him on many occasions while he was between the ages of 14 and 18.
An investigation disclosed the victim met with Dorfner after joining B'nai B'rith Youth Organization's Wood Crest Chapter in 1996. Soon after he became a youth counselor, Dorfner reportedly began to invite the victim to his Evesham house.
The Dorfner investigation continued into September. Early in the month investigators questioned an adult man from Camden County who also allegedly had been assaulted by Dorfner while he was a member of the B'nai B'rith youth group.
The incidents reportedly started when the man was 14 years old and continued until he was 16 years old.
The sexual assaults occurred between the summer of 1995 and March 1999, the official investigation revealed. Many of the assaults occurred inside Dorfner's home.
While the victims were at his home, Dorfner allegedly showed them pornographic videos and photographs on his home computer. The media depicted children engaged in sexual acts with adult males.
Officials said none of Dorfner's assaults took place during sanctioned B'nai B'rith activities or on the youth group's property.
Dorfner ended his relationship with B'nai B'rith in May of 2003, when he stepped down from the position of youth advisor. He had been a volunteer at the organization for about eight years.
The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said B'nai B'rith "fully cooperated" with the investigation.
Special agents from the FBI worked with local authorities on the investigation. While examining Dorfner's case, they found a separate inquiry about the man was being conducted by the FBI regarding his sending child pornography images to an undercover FBI agent via the Internet.
Dorfner was arrested without incident Wednesday night by Evesham police and officers from the county prosecutor's office. He made his initial court appearance yesterday in Burlington County Superior Court before Judge Thomas S. Smith.
Altogether, Dorfner was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault, a first degree crime; two counts of sexual assault, a second degree crime; one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a second degree crime and one count of distributing child pornography, a second degree crime. He faces up to 30 years in state prison.

Evesham Township Police and the Burlington County Prosecutor's office started the investigation July 29 after an adult male alleged that between the ages of 14 and 18 he had been assaulted several times by Dorfner in Dorfner's home.
He said he had met the defendant when he joined the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization's Wood Crest Chapter in 1996. Dorfner was a volunteer youth adviser with the organization for eight years, resigning in May, Smith said.
A second victim came forward with allegations of sexual assault by Dorfner on Sept. 2, Smith said.
An FBI investigation alleges that Dorfner also sent child pornography images over the Internet to an undercover FBI agent.
If convicted on all charges, Dorfner faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in state prison, Smith said.

MOUNT HOLLY - Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi yesterday announced the arrest of Eric Dorfner, 41, of Evesham on sexual assault and child pornography charges.

A former volunteer with the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization in Cherry Hill, N.J., was arrested Oct. 22 for allegedly sexually assaulting two teenage boys several years ago.
Eric Dorfner, 41, a sales representative with Mark 4 Enterprises in Cinnaminson, N.J., was a volunteer with the Wood Crest chapter of Aleph Zadik Aleph, the boys' division of BBYO for approximately eight years, according to law-enforcement officials. He resigned from the organization in May.
Dorfner faces numerous charges, including two counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of distribution of child pornography. The boys were members of BBYO at the time of the attacks, which took place at the defendant's home from the summer of 1995 to March 1999, according to Detective Sgt. Jack Smith, public-information officer with the Burlington County prosecutor's office.
None of the incidents occurred at BBYO events, said Smith.
The youth organization issued a statement last week that said, in part, that BBYO is fully cooperating with the authorities, and that it will not comment on the specifics of the case.
Wrote Brian Greene, BBYO's international director: "Any time we hear that an adult may have abused the trust invested in them by a child, it is not only an outrage, but it flies in the face of the values of our organization and what our tradition stands for."
According to Smith, the in- vestigation into Dorfner began on July 29 after the prosecutor's office was contacted by one of the accusers who wanted to report the attacks, which he said occurred from the time he was 14 to 18 years old.
The man told investigators that shortly after he joined BBYO, "he was invited to Mr. Dorfner's residence in Evesham, [N.J.]," said Smith.
As the investigation continued, Smith added, another person came forward claiming abuse.
"The victims viewed pornographic videos and photographs, shown to them by the defendant on his home computer," said Smith, noting that the images depicted boys and men engaging in "sexual acts."
Also, Smith said, the FBI is investigating Dorfner for allegedly transmitting child pornography over the Internet.
Dorfner appeared in court on Oct. 23, and is currently out on bail. If found guilty on all counts, he faces up to 30 years in jail.
The investigation remains ongoing.

Eric Dorfner, 42, of Evesham, pleaded guilty in December to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child stemming from his days as a counselor at a Cherry Hill chapter of B'nai B'rith. He was sentenced in Superior Court in Mount Holly.
Authorities allege the abuse took place between 1995 and 2003 in Dorfner's home. One victim, now an adult, told prosecutors that Dorfner molested him for four years, beginning when the victim was 14. Another said he was molested by Dorfner for two years, also starting at age 14. Both said Dorfner showed them pornographic videos and pictures of men having sex with children.
Dorfner was a volunteer counselor with B'nai B'rith for eight years. In May 2003, he ended his association with the group, which cooperated with police during the investigation.

Former counselor sentenced to five years in prison

MOUNT HOLLY - A former youth counselor was sentenced to five years in prison yesterday for inappropriately touching a teenage boy while they were in the hot tub of his home and sending child pornography via the Internet.
Eric Dorfner, 42, of Wagon Wheel Court in Evesham pleaded guilty in December to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Dorfner declined to comment when asked by Superior Court Judge Thomas S. Smith Jr. if he had anything to say before he was sentenced.
Dorfner was charged in October 2003 with sexually assaulting two boys, but he pleaded guilty to charges involving only one victim as part of his plea agreement.
Both victims, now adults, told Smith yesterday their lives have been irrevocably changed by the assaults
They said they have experienced nightmares, taken illegal drugs and had to undergo counseling.
"He's changed my life forever in a negative way," one told the judge.
When Dorfner pleaded guilty, he admitted to touching one of the victims on one occasion between March 1997 and March 1999.
Dorfner met the boy while he was a youth counselor at the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, Woodcrest Chapter, based at Katz Jewish Community Center in Cherry Hill, authorities said.
He had been a volunteer counselor with B'nai B'rith for about eight years before resigning in May 2003.
Dorfner also admitted when he pleaded guilty that he used his personal computer to transmit child pornography to what turned out to be an undercover FBI agent in March 2003.
Authorities said the pornography did not involve either of the victims who Dorfner was originally charged with assaulting.
After he is released from prison, Dorfner must comply with all provisions of Megan's Law.
He must submit a DNA sample for inclusion in a database of sex offenders. He also will have to register with police, and he will be subject to community supervision for the rest of his life.
In exchange for his plea agreement, multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault, aggravated sexual contact and sexual assault filed against Dorfner were dismissed yesterday.
Meanwhile, the victims are seeking unspecified damages from Dorfner in civil lawsuits.
